Thread: George William Smith

Please can anyone help me find the parents of George William Smith born circa 1843 in british Guyana. It is likely that his father was in the military. He was married to Mary Amelia Williams born about 1849 in Corfu Greece. He was an officer in the British army and as far as I know he was in the Hampshire regiment so any info on his military career would be welcomed. I don`t have details of the year of death, I think he died in Portsmouth Hampshire. I don`t need census info as I have those.

The 1901 RG 13 640 128 24 census indicates that he was a Lt Col retired

GWS death looks like post 1901, have you found him on the 1911 census?

As he was in the military, it is likely his promotions would be recorded in the London Gazette www.london-gazette.co.uk/

Thanks Elsabels for the info. I don`t have the 1901 or 1911 census details. It seems that I won`t be able to trace this line further back and I have found this ancestor to be the most frustrating in trying to find info on birth details. If a British citizen is born abroad are their details lodged in the UK or in the country of their birth?
