Thread: John Lake 1889-?

Hi, I wonder if someone could help or point me in the right direction please?!

My husband's great grandfather, John Lake was born 15 May 1889 in Bromley, Poplar, London.

In December 1911, he married Choice Mason Lewis.
They had my husband's grandfather in October 1911 (ooops!!) in Canning Town, West Ham.
In May 1913, they had a daughter in Bromley, Poplar.

In 1918, Choice has a son, in Norfolk, by another man. She then has 4 more children with him and they finally marry in 1960! (He was 78 and she was 67!!).

The problem I have is that I don't know what happened to John Lake! The granddaughter of his brother recalls him visiting her family in the late 50s, early 60s in Deptford. She seems to think he used to travel by bus, so can't have been living too far away. He also used to breed pigeons!

I have checked death indexes, but cannot find a suitable match and I can't seem to find any army service records for him, during WW1.

Does anyone have any idea of where to go next? John Lake also had a twin brother, Henry, and I can't find him, either!

Thank you very much for the searching you have done for me!

I have John H Lake's (1911) birth certificate and also the birth certificate of his father, John Lake b. 1889. I assumed Bromley was in Poplar because on the certificate it said the birth was registered in the sub-district of Bromley in the registration district of Poplar-is it a case of district changing over the years?

I have the birth/marriage certificates for the records you found.

The problem is I can't find a death record for John Lake b. 1889 or account for his whereabouts from Caroline's birth until his death (other than the family story I have been given). My husband's grandfather never mentioned his father and when he married in 1936, he stated his father was deceased, which doesn't match up with the family story!

My family tree has been relatively brick-wall free, but two of my husband's great grandfather's are causing me such a headache!!
