    Default Norfolk Ancestor

I am trying to find any information on Sarah Bycraft nee Eggett my 2x gr grandmother.
Sarah married Edward Bycraft in Spalding 1874. I have a copy of her marriage certificate and her father was entered as John Eggett.
I believe Sarah was born in the Tottenhill area of Norfolk but I am at a loss because her birth place differs from place to place on all censuses from 1871 to 1901.
Sarah is my brickwall and I cant find anything on her or her family before 1871.

In 1851 Sarah was lodging with a family named Watkins in Tottenhill

    1851 England Census
    Name: Sarah Eggett Age: 18
    Estimated birth year: abt 1833
    Relation: Lodger Gender: Female
    Where born: Tottenhill, Norfolk, England
Civil parish: Tottenhill County/Island: Norfolk Country: England
Registration district: Downham Sub-registration district: Wiggenhall
ED, institution, or vessel: 6 Household schedule number: 41
    Household Members: Name Age
William Watkins 32 Mary Watkins 59
Charles Watkins 19 Ann Watkins 16 Robert Watkins 14 Edward Watkins 10
    Sarah Eggett 18

You need to research the Parish Reords for a birth/christening, BMD reg did not start until 1837. There may be a link between the Watkins and Eggett families [John Eggett Spouse: HANNAH WATKINS Marriage: 15 JAN 1816 St Margaret, Kings Lynn, Norfolk, England ] Kings Lynn is about 5 miles from Tottenhill.

There are a lot of Norfolk parishes on the www.familysearch.org pilot site - go to the site and click on search records and choose pilot, then choose browse collection and select Europe. Scroll down to UK and then click on the link. You'll have to look at each page of the register images, but at least you have a rough idea which years to search.

Sarah's age is entered as 38 on her marriage certificate and she was a spinster. John Eggett (Labourer) being her father.

I think the name James must have a strong link to Sarah's forebears because she had a son James Eggett b abt 1858 according to the 1871 census for Spalding. The only James I can find for that year was born in Yarmouth but he appears to be the wrong one. One of Sarah's daughter's, Hannah my gr grandmother also had a son named James.

The Sarah that was living with the Watkins family 1851 appears not to be my Sarah because she married the son Charles and was still with him and their family in 61, 71, 81

I know from above Sarah is listed as a spinster but could she have been previously married. In the 1891 Census she as a daughter living with her, Hannah b1867 plus grandchildren Ada b1881 and James 1891. All three being born in Spalding.

If this is the same Hannah Sarah was a spinster:

    Name: Hannah Eggett Gender: Female
    Baptism/Christening Date: 12 Jun 1867
Baptism/Christening Place: Downham Market, Norfolk, England
    Father's Name:
    Mother's Name: Sarah Eggett

[QUOTE=noggin28;226972][QUOTE=bobert;226949]Sarah's age is entered as 38 on her marriage certificate and she was a spinster. John Eggett (Labourer) being her father.

I dont think Sarah had been married before she married Edward Bycraft in 1874, although that was my train of thought to start with.

Sarah's daughter Hannah, my gr. grandmother, was born in the Downham Union Workhouse Norfolk on 4th April 1867. James Eggett born 1890 Spalding was Hannah's son.
Ada Ayre Eggett born Dec. 1880 Spalding. was the daughter of Margaret Eggett, Sarah's other daughter.

According to the 1871 census Sarah's marital status was entered as a widow which is why I originally thought she had been married before. Opinions of other researchers say she most likely used that guise to gain employment knowing she had three children with her.

It's very difficult to pinpoint exactly where Sarah was born because on every census from 1871 to 1901 she is entered with a different birth place and also her age varies on the censuses which makes it doubly difficult to trace a birth year.

I expect saying she was a widow was to cover the fact that her children were illegitimate!
