I have a seriously messed up tree and its taken me awhile to unravel it but now I'd like a bit of help checking a couple of facts to make sure I haven't gone wrong anywhere or missed a record.
Eliza Hartfield (B. 1866 Woolwich, Kent) married Peter Farrell (B abt 1866 Edgeworthstown Co Longford or Haddington Scotland of the 5th Dragoon Guards) 3rd March 1888 at St Annes Cathedral, Belfast. Now the transcribed record lists her fathers name as John Hartfield occupation soldier.
On the 1911 census in Belfast Eliza lists her birthplace as England and also lists herself as a widow.
I sent off for a birth certificate for an Elizabeth C Hartfield born in Woolwich, Kent and initially I dismissed it as the wrong certificate because the fathers name was listed as Henry Hartfield of the Royal Artillery.
When the 1901 census for Ireland became available, I found Eliza again, this time she lists herself as Eliza C Farrell. Suddenly I'm thinking maybe the certificate I sent for IS the right one. FMP doesn't have a service record online yet for a Henry Hartfield but I did find a marriage to an Elizabeth Cook and pretty much everyone on this side onwards is Royal Artillery or based in Woolwich, Kent.
Eliza lists her birthplace on the 1891 Aldershot census as Woolwich, Kent so again, more proof which points towards the marriage entry being mis transcribed or wrongly entered, although maybe there's some confusion as her grandfathers name IS John and he WAS a soldier. I can only find one child born to Henry Hartfield and Elizabeth Cook and wondered if maybe it was John Cook her grandfather who attended the marriage and perhaps gave her away, giving rise to the confusion?
I've ordered the copy of the marriage certificate to see exactly whats written on the official copy and I'll let you all know but in the meantime could someone have a nosey, in the meantime here is the information and dates you may require.
27th April 1885 Peter Farrell accepted into 5th Dragoon Guards in Manchester
2nd July 1866 Eliza Caroline Hartfield born Greenwich, Woolwich Arsenal, County of Kent to Henry Hartfield and Elizabeth Cook. Henry is listed as Corporal Royal Artillery.
Henry Hartfield and Elizabeth Cook married on 26th August 1865 in Greenwich, Kent. Henry was listed as a widower, he'd previously married a Fanny Tombs Burkin in 16th August 1862.
Henry was born in East Grinstead, West Sussex and was baptised on the 27th December 1827 his father was listed as Michael Hartfield labourer. Michael Hartfield married Sarah brooker in East Grinstead, West Sussex on 7th April 1827.
Elizabeth Cooks parents were John Cook born abt 1815 in Gloucester, his service records was online and he was a Sergeant in the Royal Artillery. He married Caroline Brandie on 18th June 1838 in Plumstead, Kent.
Caroline Brandie's father was James Brandie (B abt 1797) from Aberdeen, he was also in the Royal Artillery and his service record is also online.
If anyone wants any more info please ask and I will endevour to provide more info!!
Thanks in advance
Claire
