    Default Hartfield - help!

I have a seriously messed up tree and its taken me awhile to unravel it but now I'd like a bit of help checking a couple of facts to make sure I haven't gone wrong anywhere or missed a record.

Eliza Hartfield (B. 1866 Woolwich, Kent) married Peter Farrell (B abt 1866 Edgeworthstown Co Longford or Haddington Scotland of the 5th Dragoon Guards) 3rd March 1888 at St Annes Cathedral, Belfast. Now the transcribed record lists her fathers name as John Hartfield occupation soldier.

On the 1911 census in Belfast Eliza lists her birthplace as England and also lists herself as a widow.

I sent off for a birth certificate for an Elizabeth C Hartfield born in Woolwich, Kent and initially I dismissed it as the wrong certificate because the fathers name was listed as Henry Hartfield of the Royal Artillery.

When the 1901 census for Ireland became available, I found Eliza again, this time she lists herself as Eliza C Farrell. Suddenly I'm thinking maybe the certificate I sent for IS the right one. FMP doesn't have a service record online yet for a Henry Hartfield but I did find a marriage to an Elizabeth Cook and pretty much everyone on this side onwards is Royal Artillery or based in Woolwich, Kent.

Eliza lists her birthplace on the 1891 Aldershot census as Woolwich, Kent so again, more proof which points towards the marriage entry being mis transcribed or wrongly entered, although maybe there's some confusion as her grandfathers name IS John and he WAS a soldier. I can only find one child born to Henry Hartfield and Elizabeth Cook and wondered if maybe it was John Cook her grandfather who attended the marriage and perhaps gave her away, giving rise to the confusion?

I've ordered the copy of the marriage certificate to see exactly whats written on the official copy and I'll let you all know but in the meantime could someone have a nosey, in the meantime here is the information and dates you may require.

27th April 1885 Peter Farrell accepted into 5th Dragoon Guards in Manchester

2nd July 1866 Eliza Caroline Hartfield born Greenwich, Woolwich Arsenal, County of Kent to Henry Hartfield and Elizabeth Cook. Henry is listed as Corporal Royal Artillery.

Henry Hartfield and Elizabeth Cook married on 26th August 1865 in Greenwich, Kent. Henry was listed as a widower, he'd previously married a Fanny Tombs Burkin in 16th August 1862.

Henry was born in East Grinstead, West Sussex and was baptised on the 27th December 1827 his father was listed as Michael Hartfield labourer. Michael Hartfield married Sarah brooker in East Grinstead, West Sussex on 7th April 1827.

Elizabeth Cooks parents were John Cook born abt 1815 in Gloucester, his service records was online and he was a Sergeant in the Royal Artillery. He married Caroline Brandie on 18th June 1838 in Plumstead, Kent.

Caroline Brandie's father was James Brandie (B abt 1797) from Aberdeen, he was also in the Royal Artillery and his service record is also online.

If anyone wants any more info please ask and I will endevour to provide more info!!

    Thanks in advance

    Claire

    Default Thanks!

I haven't found anything that goes against the stuff I've found but I wanted to be sure I haven't kind of gone off on a wrong track.

I haven't been able to track Peter Farrell any further back than 1885, he doesn't turn up on any census, not even the Scottish census, naturally there's no Irish census before 1901 and all I know is that his father's name is Matthew Farrell and his address was given as St Mary Street Edinburgh on Peters service records.

Peter gives his previous occupation as Footman, but without a mothers name I could be sending off for certs left right and centre and still not know which one was right!!!!

Waiting on the marriage cert from Belfast now so will let you know when it arrives and exactly what the hell it says on there...lol!!

In the meantime, if anyone's really bored, see if you can track down Peter (Also known as Patrick) Farrell he was born abt 1865/6 Either in Haddington, Scotland (Which I don't think he was I've already looked on Scotlands People) or Edgeworthstown, Co Longford, could be but Farrell is such a bloody popular name there its almost impossible to tell!!

On the marriage cert, Peters father is named as Matthew Farrell and his occupation is listed as Beetler (connected to the linen trade) Peter was a Roman Catholic but Eliza his wife was Church of England and they married in St Annes Church of Ireland (03/03/1888). First child Elizabeth Mary Farrell was born 30th March 1888 in Belfast (hmmmm....I wonder why they got married huh?!)

Second child John James Farrell born 5/04/1890 in Carrickfergus.

5th April 1891 the family appears on the 1891 census in Aldershot with the 5th Dragoon guards

sometime in 1891 -1892 my gt grandmother is born and on 8th April 1892 Alice Edith Farrell is baptised in Aldershot (Still have not found a birth entry for her....god knows I've looked!!!)

18th April 1892 Peter is transferred onto army reserve

7th May 1892 Peter joins Cheshire Police force collar number 191.

19th December 1893 Frederick Matthew Farrell born Nantwich, Cheshire

June 1895 Edward William Farrell born Nantwich, Cheshire

17th April 1897 Peter is discharged from army reserve

31st December 1897 Peter resigns from Cheshire police force

24th April 1899 Thomas Herbert Farrell born in Belfast. Peters occupation is once again listed as soldier, however on Thomas' baptism Peter is listed as Labourer. Baptism was on 07/06/1899 at St Philips in Belfast.

After this time Peter disappears and doesn't show on the 1901 or 1911 census in Ireland. The kids are in Nazereth House orphanage in 1901 and living with Eliza in 1911 who lists herself as widow by that time.

So, if anyones got time on thier hands....lol!!
