1) A babseborn child who knew her father
2) married previously i.e GULLEY married BARRATT
3) mother married Mr GULLEY
Have you looked for a George GULLEY on the 1841 / 1851 census to try and identify him?
Who were witnesses at the marriage, place of marriage, ages of parties etc......the information given is very scant!
Sarah was illegitimate and so has her mother's surname.
What area is this for? Also Sarah may not have been a Spinster although its stated on the Marriage Cert.

If BARRETT was Sarah's mothers name, then I would consider that she knew who the father was i.e George GULLEY......I have in my family a lady of the village who is recorded as having had 8 baseborn children...no comments, one being my ancestor, he and his 1/2 sister both show fathers names on the marriage cert, further research has produced the connection, albeit that each has different father!
At the time Sarah was born, 'support' would either come form the parents or in the form of parish relief...the parish would not want to pay if there was a known father!
Thank you all for your replies.
These are the full details on the Marriage Certificate
30 Sept. 1845 Islington Parish
John Mason of full age widower shoemaker Islington Green
father - Samuel Mason - Shoemaker
Sarah Barrett of full age spinster - Holloway
father George Gulley - Labourer
Witnesses - Richard Haley & Sarah Collins
Problem solved - found her in Wortham Union Workshouse 1841 with two children Emma 6 and Charles Barrett 4. Also in the same workhouse is John Mason with four daughter's. The sad thing is John and Sarah marry in Islington in 1845, assume they left their children in the workhouse as they are not with them on the 1851. They have two more children!
Will now have to try and find out what happened to the six children that were abandoned.
Many thanks for your help.
it explains the marriage of sarah and john , but it still doesnt solve who george gulley was and how he has a different name.
Could it be George's mothers name ?
Oh! I assumed she had married someone called Barrett (although I haven't found a marriage) but for some reason said she was a spinster on the marriage certificate.
