    Default marriage cert advice. scotlands people

    hi.

    there are 2 marriages listed, just wondered which certificate I should get.. they are both same name and date.. any idea what the difference is between them?

    any advice greatly appreciated.

    These are the two marriages you refer to. There is about a 20 mile gap between Bathgate and Edinburgh and they are in different counties, you therefore need to know which area your David / Margaret lived in to get the right cert.

    Lisa, the other day I was searching for a marriage and a possible connection to my Whitehead ancestors when I found the same marriage recorded twice for different areas of Scotland..The reason for this was...The banns had to be called in the grooms parish as well as the brides...

    Hi Lisa,

    Civil registration in Scotland did not start until 1855. Records before that date are taken from the old parish records. I don't think getting a certificate will tell you any more than you can find on the Scotlands people site. Any certificate if it exsists will not be the same as the ones after 1855. The earlier the date before 1855, the less information is often found, which will explain your 1844 one.
