    Default Thorps of Pontefract/Emley

My g/g grandma Sarah Thorp was born in abt. 1833 in Pontefract. She married George Taylor in 1854 in Dewsbury. According to her marriage cert. her father was John Thorp, a coachman. Her mother was Sarah nee ?? born in Emley in abt 1792.
I cannot find either birth details of Sarah[junior] or marriage details of John and Sarah[senior]. Also John is not included in the 1841 and 1851 census i found for Sarah[senior] who was living in Pontefract.
Until i obtained George and Sarah's marriage cert. i thought Sarah[senior] was an unmarried mum. I actually found a birth record for a Sarah Thorp born in Emley in abt 1792, her parents were John and Elizabeth. Can anyone help with birth or marriage records of the above.

    kind regards
    Brian

    Hello

Following on from Hazelnut, looking at the 1851 census for Sarah Jnr who declares she was born in Pontefract, the baptism entry you need to look at is the 13/03/1833 Pontefract. It is likely that the 'Vicar' may have recorded whether or not Sarah senior was single / married etc. On the 1851 census she indicates that she is a widow
A search of the records may reveal 'other siblings'

    Try this link http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/Pontefract/

There is also a bp for Sarah THORPE 3/10/1790 Emley d/o William & Grace THORPE if this is the coreect family there are 13 bp entries for this couple in Emley Yorkshire ( in reality only poss 5 as there is duplication of entries) also a LDS member entry

As regards the 'father' this may have been made to make Sarah jnr look 'respectable'!

Hi, many thanks for your kind assistance. I knew of the Thorps of Ovenden, and took a print of the record. I am septical these people are "my Thorps" - from memory both parents were born in Halifax. The 13th March Pontefract 1833 Pontefract birth looks promising and i will follow up. I have a disc of Emley Parish Registers and will see if there was a Sarah Greenwood born there.

    Once again many thanks

    Regards Brian

Hi, many thanks for your help tying to solve this major problem. I will follow your advice with the 1833 baptism in Pontefract. It is rather strange that Sarah indicates she is a widow in 1851, whilst the marriage cert of George Taylor and Sarah in 1854 does not indicate that John Thorp is deceased. I will also look at William and Grace Thorp - i obviously missed that one!

I have searched all records and cannot find any other siblings, although it is quite possible i may have"missed" some. Your comment re making Sarah jnr look respectable - does this occur often?

    Once again, many thanks

    regards Brian

probaly more often than you realise.....I do not think your ancestor is married.....

I have a widowed mother with children on census returns, PR indicates they are all illeg...then in her late 30's she 're marries' a check of the documentation shows she was a spinster!

I would collect all references to the name form the Parish Records ( original source) and early census returns, and create 'stray ' family trees to get the feel for the family..hopefully you will find an answer

John THORP could be an uncle /cousin...check the marriage cert for witnesses......

Post / contact if you want more help / ideas

    Elsabels
    Hope this helps....
