    Default Phillips/Roberts

    Hello Everyone,

I am looking for a couple named John and Elizabeth (Roberts) Phillips..
I don't have alot of information on them, only that John was born in Cornwall, and I am not sure where Elizabeth was born. John and Elizabeth are my great great great grandparents. I know that they had the oldest son on May 6, 1844 and his name was John Frederick Phillips, the 2nd oldest was a girl named Mary Phillips and she was born Feb 2, 1846, the 3 oldest was a son named Peter Phillips and he was born in 1847. These 3 children were all born in Cornwall, and the last 2 that they had were born in Canada.. Any help on parents names of John or Elizabeth would be greatly appreciated...Or any information at all would be great..
    thanks for your time

    Regards,
    Ronye

    Hi Ronye

Some “food for thought” that could suggest that the John Phillips and Elizabeth Roberts that marry in St. Austell in 1842 "may" be the couple that you are looking for.

    IGI

John Phillips christened 2nd June 1844 in Saint Austell Cornwall - Father John Phillips - mother Elizabeth

Mary Phillips christened 7th June 1846 in Saint Austell Cornwall - Father John Phillips - mother Elizabeth

Josiah Phillips Birth 1851 Northumberland, Ontario - Father John Phillips - mother Elizabeth

(I believe the other child born in Canada was Susan Hannah - no birth record but found her marriage to George Holmes)

You mention that Peter was the 3rd oldest child - England Births and Christening 1538-1975 has a record for a Peter Philips christened 1st January 1843 St Austell - Father John Philips – mother Elizabeth Philips – is it possible that he could have been the 1st oldest?

    Indexing Project (Batch) Number: I02348-8
    Source Film Number: 1545295
    Reference Number: yr 1840-1857 p 71

This link gives a transcription of Parish Church of HOLY TRINITY St Austell, Marriage Registers

    http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~staustell/Data/SAMar/1842-43.htm

It shows the marriage on 2nd April 1842 between John Phillips – Labourer – living St Austell – father John Phillips – Labourer – and – Elizabeth Roberts – living St Mewan – father Peter Roberts – miner

On other pages on this site you will find the baptisms of the children Peter, John and Mary at the same church on the dates shown above – the father John Phillips occupation is shown as Labourer in each instance.

This information could suggest a possible family naming pattern – “Peter and John” - with parents’ fathers.

Although there is nothing firm that I have found so far to link them, the 1841 Census records 2 people of possible interest:-

Peter Roberts (61) – tin miner who is living in St. Mewan Class: HO107; Piece 146; Book: 9; Civil Parish: St Mewan; County: Cornwall; Enumeration District: 15; Folio: 36; Page: 15; Line: 18; GSU roll: 241268

and at a separate address an Elizabeth Roberts (18)
Class: HO107; Piece 146; Book: 9; Civil Parish: St Mewan; County: Cornwall; Enumeration District: 13; Folio: 4; Page: 1; Line: 21; GSU roll: 241268

It is just so unfortunate that John and Elizabeth marry and emigrate between the 1841 and 1851 censuses.

I wonder if you have all the information you need to follow the family through once Elizabeth remarries to James Spencer 14th March 1853 in Canada after the death of John in 1852 – sadly this marriage record does not give her father’s name – please let me know if you need any further details.

    Geniegenie,

A big thank you to you as well.. Yes this is the family that I am researching... And I did have Peter as the 3rd child and I can see that he is the 1st.. So that is new to me.. I was told that John and Elizabeth arrived in Canada in 1850, but I have never been able to find them in the Census in 1841 in England.. And yes I was aware that Elizabeth re-married to James Spencer after John died. But, I believe that James Spencer died before Elizabeth, because she is living with Josiah when she passed away..

    You guys are pretty amazing..

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond..

    Regards,
    Ronye
