    Default Help finding Edward Grayston

    Hi

I wonder if there is a way of finding out more about my great grandfather Edward Grayston. I know he died in 1949 aged 66. I have found him on the 1911 census living with his future wife (Maud Macready) and her family, living in Ipswich but I can find nothing before then. Do I have to get a birth certificate or is there another way of viewing his certificate. Basically I'm looking to do this as cheaply as possible! Hadn't realised how expensive it could become. Also from the 1911 Census it says he was born in Kentish Town. Its possible that his birth name isn't Edward but Granddad doesn't know/can't remember much about his father.

    Thanks for any suggestions

    Regards
    Ruth

    Hi Ruth,

Somebody on ancestry has him on their family tree and they are under the impression that he was adopted? If that is the case, you may struggle to find a birth certificate for him under that name. You could try to order his marriage certificate to see what information is on there. Unfortunately, you would have to send off for the certificate.

    Hope this helps,

    Mrsp

    Hi Ruth,

Just had another look at some records and found these:

Name: Arthur Edwin GraystonBirth: Dec 1882 - Ipswich, Suffolk

I cannot find a matching death record or marriage under this name.

Here he is on the 1891 census-check the sub-registration district-Kentish Town!

    Name:John W GraystonAge:43Estimated birth year:abt 1848Relation:HeadSpouse's name:MatildaGender:MaleWhere born:Ipswich, Suffolk, EnglandCivil parish:St PancrasEcclesiastical parish:Brookfield St AnneCounty/Island:LondonCountry:EnglandStreet Address:

And again on 1901 census, although this time he's going by the name of Arthur!

It is a good possibility this maybe your man. Arthur Edwin Grayston does appear on somebody's tree as well-they've managed to go back, but they don't appear to have come forward from him on the tree.

Maybe this is your man and because he went by different names, they couldn't trace him forward. I would order the marriage certificate though, to confirm his father's name.

    Hello

The only Edward Arthur GRAYSTON I can find is b ( born) 5/11/1875 bp ( baptised ) 05/03/1876 at St John in Hackney s/o Robert James & Louisa GRAYSTON of Gloster Street, Cambridge Heath, father's occup Clicker

Looked for siblings and found under the name GRAYSTONE
let me know if you want the details

The family can be found on the 1881 census (this I think is a free census return to search) at RG11 296 under Graystone

Robert and his wife were both born in Ipswich!

I live in Cheshire, we have access to ancestry through our local libray and at Manchester and Chester Record Offices...

Thanks Mrsp, my grandfather has a vague idea that Edward may have been adopted as well. I'm on ancestry myself so I wonder if its my tree you've found

Thanks also everyone else for the pointers. I'll try the marriage certificate first, then come back and ask more questions! lol

This is the marriage reg for Edward and Maud. This should if known have Edwards father on it. It would be worth getting it to be sure of getting the right family.

Noggin28 - I can confirm that Maud was Edwards wife and my grandfathers mother so yes you have the right entry. I shall get a copy of the wedding certifcate sorted out to help me with the next step of confirming Edwards parents.

I have a copy of the marriage certificate and it states Edwards Father as John W Grayston - Carpenter.

On searching for John W Grayston I can find no mention of an Edward A Grayston. so still searching on this one......
