Thread: Sarah Pettican S.O.S!

Hi there,

I've been trying to find the death date of my gt-gt-grandmother, Sarah Rebecca Pettican (maiden name King). Born 12th February 1853 Deptford, London. Married my gt-gt-grandfather William Pettican (born 19th December 1848) in West Bergholt, Essex. He died in 1912 and while I am not 100% certain I believe that she didn't remarry after his death. Looking on FreeBMD (in the Lexden district where all Pettican births, deaths and marriages seem to have taken place) I've found two matches I thought might have been Sarah's death year. One in the 1st quarter of 1921 and the other in the 3rd of 1932.
I bought the 1921 death cert only to find that the Sarah on the cert was married to a Walter Pettican and NOT my William. The 1932 date doesn't tie in with her birth year where it shows the death age?

Am I missing something? Is anyone else able to help - it would be GREATLY appreciated.

I have been through the Death Index from 1901 until 1950 when Sarah would have been just short of 100 yrs old. I have compiled list of all the Petticans whose deaths were registered in Lexden during that period

The only other Sarah I could find who was around the right age was Sarah 89 Mar 1939 Kensington 1a 290

Don’t forget that the information in the entry is only as good as the person informing the Registrar of the death. Sometimes that person did not know the exact date of birth so guessed as to how old the deceased was. Not all ages are accurate.

Also have you thought of checking the Parish Registers for Lexden. They should give the date of burial which, in turn, will give you the year of death.

Thanks for your research Emeltee, much appreciated. I find it so strange that this has become so hard to get a clear date for. I know she had a lot of family living in Hendon, London so maybe that's where I should be checking the records to?

Sarah R PETTICAN Lexden 4s 603 q3 1921 aged 68

I'm thinking that this one looks very promising:

Sarah R PETTICAN Lexden 4s 603 q3 1921 aged 68

The death date of 1921 ties in with her birthdate of 1853 being 68 years old at time of death - Lexden is the area where all my Pettican's were born, married and died and the fact that it's Sarah R ties in my Sarah REBECCA - so will get the cert and see if it's right.

I've just noticed a difference between the two Sarah R's (died 1921) that both of you found for me even though I think they are supposed to be the same person:

One is Sarah R 68 Sep 1921 4a 663

While the other is Sarah R PETTICAN Lexden 4s 603 q3 1921 aged 68

I'm assuming that the top one is the correct volume and page number one as all the other deaths are listed with 4a in them rather than 4s in addition the page numbers vary so I went with the 663 one as well.

Thanks very much, the death cert came this morning and it is my Sarah Pettican so I have her death date which is great. How to try and find where she was buried, maybe best to contact an archives place in Essex??
