    Hi Valijay,

Adoption as we know it in the U.K did not start until the 1920's. Before then, children were either bought up by a relative or given to someone that had more money and was able to give the child a better life. Unless, the birth mother eventually told someone about her child, this is a very difficult area for genealogy research.

Thanks girls, I thought it might be a bit tricky this one, I found the Pullen family that had Richard Pullen in the adoptive father in the 1891 census, a very large family and the father was also called Richard and the mother Eliza, there were three girls together and then in 1901 census two more girls were added,, the eldest one was called Eliza, now the other two Jessie and Louisa were both in service later but I cannot find anything on Eliza, because I did say to her that that due to the war and illness from diseases, there were lots of parents died early and left children, which in lots of cases the family took them in and raised them.this was why I was trying to find Eliza,

I did a search on Free BMD for all Ethel Gladys births in Surrey in 1904. The registration district for Surbiton is Kingston.
The two which came up were - Ethel Gladys Fletcher Jun 1904 Kingston 2a 381 and
    Ethel Gladys E Parsons Dec 1904 Kingston 2a 401
It might be worth searching 1911 census to see if you can eliminate either?
