hi everyone.

can anyone help me try and find what country this surname originates from. borriell this was the original name of my husbands grandfather. it was altered to the name borrill, as far as we know the family could have arrived here from russia when we do not know. any help in tracing this surname is greatly appreciated.

How do you know it was Borriell? Apart from the problem of its being foreign, a lot of names are misrecorded or change spelling over time. I have lots of instances in my own family tree:



Aylesbury/Ailsbury/Elsbury



Malen/Malin/Mailins/Melin/Mealing



Chown/Chowns/Chouns/Chounes



are just some examples. The first instance you have of Borriell is only as good as the person giving the info and the person writing it down.

i know that the name borriell is correct as we have just found that my husbands ggrandfather was called samuel reuben borriel, but was altered to borrill.
samuel was born abt.1864 in hull. we think his parents where immigrants from russia or around that area. i found that grandads name was arthur william borriell,
then changed to borrill he was born in hull also in 1894,we know there are other siblings. it would be great to find any information about the family,
any help is greatly appreciated, thank you for answering my message.

its great to be back on here, i have really missed it, now some catching up to do. i will try the website you mentioned may have some look hopefully.
just love to find where they originally came from as my husband as never really known, only what he was told so will try and find some thing about his family for him....
