Thanks for the reply, the Selina (1846) I and looking at is in the 1861 census. I have all the census and I believe the Right marriage date of 1865. What I cannot find is who Selina married.

    Hi Noggin,

I've had a look at the original image of the marriage record for Selina. I noted the volume and page number and did a nameless search using these on freebmd.

These were the names that came up:

    Stephen Hipkiss

    Samuel Shemmell

    Emma White

Obviously there is a female name missing from the list, so I did a 1871 census search for Stephen Hipkiss. On the off-chance a child of that name whose mother's name was Emma came up. They were living with some Whites, so I guess we can assume that Stephen Hipkiss married Emma White.

This leaves Samuel Shemmell as a possible spouse for Selina. I hadn't been able to find them on the 1871 census to back this up, but I did find this death record:

    Name: Selina Shemmell

    Birth: abt 1846

    Death: Mar 1872 - Birmingham (1837-1924), Warwickshire

Samuel remarried an Ellen Susan Cox in 1873, and I have them on a census.

Looking further, I did find them on the 1871 census-they had been mistranscribed.

    Name: Selina Shemwell

    Age: 25

    Estimated birth year: abt 1846

    Relation: Wife

    Spouse's name: Samuel

    Gender: Female

    Where born: Birmingham, Warwickshire, England

    Civil parish: Birmingham

    Ecclesiastical parish: St Nicholas

    Town: Birmingham

    County/Island: Warwickshire

    Country: England

    Registration district: Birmingham

    Sub-registration district: St George

    ED, institution, or vessel: 26

    Household schedule number: 125

    Household Members: Name Age

    Samuel Shemwell 28

    Selina Shemwell 25

    Samuel Shemwell 11

    Alice Shemwell 4

    Regards

    Thanks Mrsp

I had worked my way to Samuel Shemmell but could not find either Samuel or Selina on the 1871 census. I have accessed the census and it is not clear if it is Shemwell or Shemmell. But I believe it is the right couple.

It was interesting to see his occupation in a later census was Brass Finisher. Although this is my wife's line that is the trade I started off in. Thanks again, another dead end solved.
