Thread: James Charleston/Charleson

I am trying to find info on James Charleston (other spellings Charleson. Charlson) born 1833-1836 Bolton, Lancashire.

I have him in the 1871, 1881, and 1891 censuses, living and working as colliery engine driver in Staffordshire.

He married a)in 1855 to Esther Hopkins, then after her death, b)in 1882 to Mary Ann Cooper.



Can someone please help me with: -

1) James' exact birthdate and place?

2) James in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses?

3) any info on his second wife, Mary Ann Cooper, esp, her maiden name, as she was a widow when he married her.



A huge 'ask' I know but I would really appreciate help. I am a bit stuck.

have you his marriage cert to esther. what does that say about father, address, witness etc. if you dont have it i think that should be your first port of call.

ther is a huge gap between first two children and joseph. could he have been married before ester. she is also a bit young to have had maryann? the children are also not listed in age order?? interestingly also i can find joseph and maryanns baptism (giving ester as mother) but not thomas' but can see his birth . ah there is also a baptism of a john in 1863 but he died 1867. still some big gaps??



a transcript error here I think: - on the actual census image, Mary Ann's age is 11, not 18, and I have ancestry.com references for her baptism as 25 Sep 1859[b]
