after replys to previous post I cant find a death for Charles John Gatton born 1859 and im wondering that because he was a fisherman maybe he was either lost or died at sea . His son was born 1893 so sometime after that as his wife remarried in 1896

    Hi Jayne,

If the body of a known fisherman is found, it is normal for the body to be returned to his home parish. It is possible also that he has been lost at sea. I have seen a lot of entries in parish records just giving the date, the parish of the burial and an entry like " Body found on the beach under ...... pier.

I have one in my tree whose next of kin got a certificate saying "Missing - presumed dead". Maybe there is a burial record but not a death one.

Also worth searching the local papers to see if this did happen. The local library may have news on it.

    Hello Jayne

Your timeframe for death appears to be 1891 census to 1896 remarriage of 'wife'

Did his wife marry under GATTON or her maiden name...it would be interesting to see what her status was on re marriage

    While looking I found this

    Charles John Gatton

    Record Type: Baptism

    Date: 5 Feb 1858

    Mother's Name: Ann Gatton

    Parish: St Alfege

    Borough: Greenwich

    County: Middlesex

    Actual entry reads:

Charles John GATTON s/o Ann single woman b Workhouse 11 Jan

    Hello jayne 1966

JACKSON William Edward Caistor 7a 901

    Johnson Sarah Caistor 7a 901

her status on re marriage would be interesting, it may give a clue as to what happened to her first husband Charle GATTON
