I think that the reason that you are having trouble tracing Charles maybe because he and his siblings adopted their mother Sarah’s 2nd husband’s surname of “Jackson” in the 1901 Census.

I noted that in his military papers Charles states that his next of kin are William E and Sarah Jackson of Beedham Gate House, Fish Dock Road Grimsby.

A William Edward Jackson marries as follows

    Marriages Mar 1896

    Hill Emily Caistor 7a901

    JACKSON William Edward Caistor 7a901

    Johnson Sarah Caistor 7a901

    Scawind Leonhard John Caistor 7a901

    1901 Census

    Name: Sarah Jackson

    Age: 36

    Estimated birth year: abt 1865

    Relation: Wife

    Spouse's name: William E

    Gender: Female

Where born: Marsh Chapel, Lincolnshire, England

    Civil parish: Great Grimsby

    Ecclesiastical parish: St James

    Town: Grimsby

    County/Island: Lincolnshire

    Registration district: Grimsby

    Sub-registration district: Great Grimsby

    Household Members:

    Name, Age

    William E Jackson, 37

    Sarah Jackson, 36

Lilian Jackson, 13 (Possible 1887 birth Gatton Lilian Caistor 7a644)

Minnie Jackson, 12 (Possible 1889 birth Gatton Minnie Caistor 7a620)

Ethel M Jackson, 9 (Possible 1891 birth Gatton Ethel Maud Caistor 7a625)

    Charles W Jackson, 7

Compare this to what I believe is the same Sarah with her first husband in 1891 Census

    Name: Sarah Gatton

    Age: 24

    Estimated birth year: abt 1867

    Relation: Wife

    Spouse's name: Charles J

    Gender: Female

Where born: Marsh Chapel, Lincolnshire, England

    Civil parish: Great Grimsby

    Ecclesiastical parish: St Andrew

    Town: Grimsby

    County/Island: Lincolnshire

    Registration district: Caistor

    Sub-registration district: Great Grimsby

    Household Members:

    Name, Age

    Charles J Gatton, 32

    Sarah Gatton, 24

    Lillian Gatton, 3

    Minnie Gatton, 2

On IGI there is a marriage record for a Charles John Gatton and a Sarah Johnson 19th June 1887, St. James, Great Grimsby.

I haven’t found a death for Charles John Gatton but it is conceivable that Sarah married William Edward Jackson using her maiden name whilst her first husband was still alive!

on hiss military records he states next of kin -mother - as sarah jackson?johnson? so i assume his father died and mother remarried. however cant find remarriage. cant find lilian or minnie in 1901 either so they are either under another name or been miscribed?? they both later married in grimsby so should be there
