    Hi

Not sure if anyone will be able to help.

Have a bit of a mystery.

Am looking for any information on one John W F L Evington or he may have been known as a child as John Hancock.

I have John on the 1891 Census for the Morley Area of Yorkshire as follows:

    George Hancock Head

    Matilda Hancock Wife

Matilda Louisa Hancock Daughter Age abt 23

Theodosia Hancock Daughter Age abt 19

    Cornelius Son

    John W F L Evington Grandson Age 3

I can find no birth registered for a John W F L Evington. I can't find John Evington on a 1901 census either. Although I have managed to find a marriage registration and even a death registration for a John W Evington in the 1900's.

I have however, found a birth for a John Hancock for 1888 in Yeadon Leeds. I found this on Yorkshire BMD and I am going to request the birth certificate.

I just wondered if anyone had this individual on their tree or if there were any parish records for Yeadon on line or can anyone find a John Hancock or Evington on a 1901 census.

Any information or advice would be very much appreciated.

    Many thanks.

    Hi Havenh,

I've just done a census search for a John Hancock, there is a result for a John Edw (Edward) Hancock, born in Yeadon, whose father was Soloman and mother was Annie. This may be the the birth you found, and it doesn't appear to be yours! I would hang fire in ordering that cert for now! I'm still searching for your John.

    Regards

    Hi havenh,

I've had another look at the 1891 census image and I would have transcribed John's name as John W. F. C. Ervington. I went back and did a search of the 1901 census for a 'John', 'b 1888 +/- 1yr', 'Leeds, Yorkshire'. I got the results and skipped through to the 'Es' and came across this entry and I believe this is the John you are looking for.

    Name: John W Errington

    Age: 13

    Estimated birth year: abt 1888

    Relation: Son

    Father's Name: John W

    Mother's Name: Louisa

    Gender: Male

    Where born: Leeds, Yorkshire, England

    Civil parish: Morley

    Ecclesiastical parish: St Paul

    County/Island: Yorkshire

    Country: England

    Street Address:

    Occupation:

    Condition as to marriage:

    Education:

    Employment status: View image

    Registration district: Dewsbury

    Sub-registration district: Morley

    ED, institution, or vessel: 13

    Neighbors: View others on page

    Household schedule number: 235

    Household Members: Name Age

    John W Hartley 30

    Louisa Hartley 32

    John W Errington 13

    Clifford Hartley 8

    Wilfred Hartley 7

    Clarence Hartley 3

From there, I found this birth (no other matches for Yorkshire area)

    Name: John William Errington

Birth: Sep 1889 - Hunslet, Yorkshire - West Riding

From there, I looked for a marriage for a John Hartley to a Louisa, around the time of the 1st Hartley child. I found a marriage in 1891 of a John William Hartley to a Matilda Louisa Errington!! Looking back at the 1891 census, I am assuming that Matilda Louisa Errington and Matilda Louise Hancock are one and the same, as the date and place of birth match!

Hope this has been of some help.

    Regards

    Hi Mrsp

I just wanted to thank you so much for your time and trouble and yes this does look like the John I am looking for especially living in the Morley area as this is where the Hancocks lived and worked. I am very grateful for your assistance and it really is very kind of you to help. Not only have I been looking for John but also Matilda Louisa as well. So I am delighted to have now found both of them. Your expertise is much appreciated.

    Best wishes.

    Victoria.

    Hi,

If you are unable to look at the original images, if you private message me your email address, I can send you them. Also, I was wondering if Matilda married John Hartley under the surname Errington, whether she was actually married to John Errington's father?

I've done a marriage search for her around 1888, but didn't find anything. Anyway, I did take a gamble on a marriage for a John Errington. One married in the Sept qtr of 1888 in Leeds. When I looked at the others on the page, there was a Harry Brown and an Adela Fearnley. There seemed to be a female name missing! it may be worth ordering John's birth certificate to find out who his father was and whether his parents were married.

If I can help anymore, please do not hesitate to ask.

    Best Wishes

    Mrsp
