    Hello,

I am attempting to find out more information regarding one of my relatives, my Great grandfather John Joseph Taylor who may have served during WWI. I hope you maybe able to assist me in some way with my research.

I have used Ancestry UK and found their website research information to be very disappointingly generalised and vague after inputting accurate & specific information. Obviously the National Archives would be an avenue to take however I think that some members might offer some hints and advice on researching regimental records etc.

I have a photograph of John J. Taylor and his wife Harriet Parsons.

He appears to be wearing a WWI type uniform, but unfortunately I cannot make out any regimental badges due to the photographs grainy quality.

There appears to be some insignia or numbers on his lapels, but again the detail is very blurred.

However, he does clearly have two small chevrons/stripes pointing upwards (located at the lower arm area) on the sleeve. Can you clarify exactly what these indicate . i.e. overseas service or long service ?

John Joseph Taylor, was born 3-02-1878 at 87, High Princess Street, Southbank, Middlesbrough.

His father was William Taylor (b.1842- d.17-11-1922) & mother Elizabeth Ebberds.

John Joseph Taylor, married Harriet Parsons on 26-12-1898.

John Joseph Taylor, died 30-12-1949, also in Middlesbrough.

I have made an assumption that because he lived in SouthBank, Middlesbrough that he may have joined a Yorkshire Regiment.

However, I realise that this is not necessarily the case with some recruits choosing their own regiments rather than serving with their local regiments.

I have contacted The Green Howards Museum without success in finding any reference to John J Taylor.

I am particularly interested in finding out which Battalion & Regiment he joined and if he subsequently served with. Also any WW1 recruitment & service information or details that are available.

I understand that many WW1 service records were destroyed or partially burnt during the blitz, however, I hope that there would still be some records available particularly at Regimental museums.

Alternatively, can you suggest a positive course of action and / or contacts for my research.

    Thankyou for your assistance,

    I.Taylor
