Joseph Hepper was born is Sandford Devon in 1811. His parents are listed as William and Susanna(h). He was deported in 1838 to NSW, sentence 7yrs. I have found a number of siblings(see list below) all with the parents William and Susanna. There are also two marriages between William and Susanna and to make it more difficult two William christenings. So who was Josephs parents, William & Susanna Baker or Abbat (abbot)and who was his grandfather, Robert or Henry? Does anyone have access to the Devon Parish records who could look up which children belong to which William and Susanna.

Hi Noggin, what i found was if joseph was born 1811 then it looks more likely that his parents are william and susanna abbot because they were married closer to his birthdate in 1807. Whereas william and susana baker were married 1795 , but thats really only a guess.

What i'll do over the weekend is try to unravel whos who if i can , i do love a challenge , and this is the biggest one ive seen for a long time .

Hi Noggin, I think i found the link,

one question , you said on his death his fathers name was joseph ? wonder if that was williams middle name , and also his mothers name was susannah PICTON ( wonder if that was her mothers maiden name , ) cause we got Susanna BAKER or ABBAT. Will search for her and try to unravel the mystery.

maybe they hid their parents name because of shame on the family because of his deportation , anyway gotta sort out more of the siblings and will let you know

ok noggin, heres what i tried to work out from seperate searches and also found nothing on the sandford parish records for Hepper,

Joseph is descended from William Hepper b/c.22 june 1766 sandford , devon and Susanna Baker b/c 3 may 1767 sandford, devon MARRIED 4 MAY 1795 SANDFORD, DEVON

children Susanna Hepper c.1 dec 1795 sandford, devon

    joseph c. 17 march 1811 sandford, devon

mary ann c. 10 oct 1813 sandford, devon ( called after both mothers)

Susannas parents were Robert Baker and Mary ?

Williams parents were Henry Hepper b. 1729 sandford, devon, and Ann Squire b.1733 sandford, devon.
Married 7 june 1754 SANDFORD, DEVON

    Henry and Ann had

Ann c.20 april 1755 sandford, devon,

    William 22 june 1766

couldnt find anymore children for them

sorry couldnt work out all the children but the reason i came up with who's who was that the other William was from Witheridge, devon and so was Robert ,yours worked out all from sandford,

hope this helps , if you want details of the other heppers i have them on paper.

    Hazel

Hazelnut, this is my first visit to this site. I am descended from Joseph Hepper born 1811, and finding any definite trace of his parents has been impossible, given I live in Australia.

I am really interested in the sources/methods you used to make your deductions, which certainly sound possible. I have some Devon Records Office references, but nothing much else. Please Email link removed, please use private message system to pass on Email addresses.
