Hi folks, you recently helped me with tracing my long lost GrandUncle - Ernest William Eldridge

It was found that he emigrated to Canada 1905 and crossed to US in 1909. He then married a MARY SCOTT in Oakland Mitchigan

in July 1910. You kindly found him on 1910 US census which was before he wed.

Can you assist me with his wife Mary Scott - born 1884 in England - Unfortunately, the marriage details do not show her parents. There was a Mary Scott of similar age in Hove in 1901.

Can you assist by checking Emigration/Border crossings / US Census around the same period as Ernest Eldridge?

It might be that they were travelling together ? A long shot maybe, but I'd be grateful for your help !

    Hello

Have you tried www.freebmd.org.uk to see if you can 'pick up' a date of birth and area?

Hi - yes - BMD shows that there is a Mary Scott born Brighton in 1884.

However it is a rather common name, and I was hoping that US/Canadian Border crossings, or passenger lists/ emigration information might give me clue as to where she was born.

Unfortunately, the marriage details do not give the names of her parents !

    Hello davidi

Maybe Mary was a bit flexi with her age or the institute didnot know her dob?

I selected this entry on the census as it is close to Brighton and the only one, it ties in with no father on the marriage cert.

    1891 census RG12 801 74

    Brighton Parocheal SChool Rottingdean

Mary A SCOTT 12 inmate scholar brighton

1901 census shows it as Warren Farm School

Thanks ! That's very interesting. Warren Farm was an Industrial School - in fact quite close to where I now live!

If this is the same Mary, then she was either abandoned or an orphan. This could be the reason that no parents were shown on her marriage details?

I think the records of Warren Farm are held at East Sussex, Lewes Records office, which is only a few miles away.

    Many thanks for your help.

Cheers, it is someone else's thought process, and thinking out of the box

I only visited your part of the country in 2002 when a relative died who lived in Rottingdean so can recall it quite well! The views acroos the downs are spectacular!

    Good luck

    Elsabels
