Thread: James Wyatt

I am trying to trace the family of James Wyatt, born approx 1835-1837 his parents were George and Elizabeth.

James emigrated to New Zealand aboard the vessel Martaban in 1856. He departed from Gravesend and paid his own passage. He came on a scheme where if you paid your own passage you would be given a land grant after you arrived in New Zealand.In New Zealand in his short life he was described as a succesful businessman and pioneer. He died in 1866 leaving 2 children and his wife.

I have searched for the ships log in Archives UK but they do not have them. There was a thought he may come from Hampshire, but this has not produced any results so far. Any help would be appreciated.

There is no sign of James in the 1841 census and at no time does he appear with his parents.

Does this death relate to James b 1804 or James b 1839??

Only the purchase of the Death Certificate or a view of the Parish Records will give that information.

Of course, if it is James junior, then George and Elizabeth are not his parents.

Hi, Thank you for this. yes I do use archives New Zealand as well as Papers Past and have been able to pick up quite a bit of thee history of James in New Zealand. I have been trying to find some information about James family back in the UK. I can already trace the other 3 families that make up my heritage who came from the UK but the links for james do not appear to add up.

Hi Mark,

The james Wyatt refered to as being born in 1839 died in 1840 aged 14 months, so this track sadly is the wrong one. I am beginning to think that James mother or father died shortly after his birth perhaps.
