Hello, I am hoping that someone can assist me. I go to my library to use Ancestry.com and wish to see the whole 1841 Census for Hamsterley, Co. Durham - I know that it exists because I have downloaded a page before, (M Tennick HO 107 307/13 Folio 5 Page 4), but I cannot get it to appear, when I fill in the information, now.

Near the bottom of the search page are 4 boxes as follows:- HO 107 Piece Book Folio Page, so I have tried this alternative search and have entered my figures in a multitude of ways, but to no avail.

I will be most grateful if someone can tell me how to use the boxes correctly (and successfully) and whether or not I need to fill in anything else on the search page.

    Many thanks.

    Hi gjb,

You only need to fill in :- HO107/307/13/5

Not everyone transcribed the numbers the same way, so it pays to check the images either side as well, eg folio 6&7.

You do not have to add any further information.

    Hi Bandit,

many thanks. Whilst it wasn't what I was looking for, (I wanted to see and download copies of Hamsterley Census sheets), as my mother-in-law is a Tennick and these people are new to me, I will now try and see if they are related to her family.

    Regards

Having looked at the coverage of 1841 census for Durham, Hamsterley is not listed. The nearest place are Wolsinham and Witton le Wear. Witton le Wear comes under Hamsterley registration district.

It would appear that Hamsterley has not been transcribed to Ancestry.co.uk for the 1841 census.

There were 490 people living in the village in 1841.

Hamsterley is covered in 1851 if this is any help.

    Hi Markf

my thanks for your comments and the web address. I have however found Hamsterley for 1841. It is under reference HO107 307/13 , Folios 4 to 9 , with pages from 1 to 20.

    Regards

    Hi

when I was in the library today I noted that I was using Ancestry.com, not Ancestry.co.uk, so my apologies because I do not know if the reference that I quoted yesterday will work on Ancestry.co.uk.

    Hello gjb

If you look at the outside the page of the digitalised copy you will find the page reference number, this is usually at the right hand side but can be found at the bottom, as a seperate 'strip of paper'.

This numbering is for that entry and is universally recognised.

RG12; The alpha numero denoted the year of the census

Piece: 2886; is individual parishes grouped together creating an area

Folio 81; the book number of the parish

Page 53 page the person you are searching can be found on

If you go to, usually the front of the census book it will describe the area covered and who the enumerator is, you never know it may be a relative!

This is why it is important to record this info so you can return to it with relevant ease! You can also identify you relatives as living in the same parish if they have the same piece number! Gives a snese of meaning to your research in later years......and reminds you where you got the info from

    So worry not

    Elsabels
