    Hi everyone,

Could anyone please help me, I am looking for my 3 x great grandfather, William Abbott, b: 1827 Portsea, Portsmouth, Hampshire. His father is Joseph Abbott b: about 1799 in Portsmouth.

I have searched everywhere I can think of, for Williams birth. William was a Merchant Seaman and so was his father Joseph. William later became a Customs House Officer, as stated on the 1881 census, but I cannot find his birth therefore, I am unable to find his mother.

    Kind Regards, cmiller

    Hi cmiller,

If joseph had been born in any other parish I might have been able to find him as the records I have usually go up to 1812 or beyond. For some reason Portsmouth only goes up to 1790 so you may have to find someone that can go to check the parish records for you.

I haven't checked for William on BMD but if he is not there he was probably born before Sep 1837.

Have you got a Clara Jessie Abbott 1884 Portsmouth in your tree ?

Hi, Sorry I have looked on my tree but I don't have Clara. Do you know Clara's father's name as William had two sons but I haven't got round to searching them yet, still concentrating on William. Maybe one of William sons was the father of Clara.

    Hello cmiller

Birth Marriage and Death Certificate as we know them only start in Sept 1837, these can be found at

    www.freebmd.org.uk

Prior to Sept 1837 you are reliant on Parish Records www.familysearch.org.uk

I have only found a Joseph ABBOTT bp 10/11/1799 St Thomas Portsmouth s/o William & Rose Anna ABBOTT but am not sure this is correct

Your key maybe the aunt on the 1861 censu Ann Kirk b1797 getting her death cert will give you quite abit of info...as to her maiden name etc!

I also haven't got around to researching them yet but a quick look at the census shows her father as probably Alexander. She married into the main line of my tree. If you think there may be a connection let me know and I will send you a pm.

You will find that a lot of Hampshire parishes are missing from the IGI as a lot of the churches would not allow the LDS to view their records. As most of my ancestors were from Hampshire I have a lot of parish records. See my thread in the help offered by members forum.
