I've come a little unstuck with a census entry from 1851, which I cannot read.

the persons name is William Denial, he is the 8th entry down from the top, a lodger, aged 42. I cannot for the life in me work out what his Job title is.

Does anyone recognise what it might be?

On the 1841 and 1861 it states Engine Tender 1851 looks about the same.
'' No one knows who we are or where we are going until we have been and gone ''.

    Thumbs up

I think the writing of this word looks different to the rest of the page. I think what is after it may be a signature of whoever added it.

I make it 11 letters and I think that:

    2,5,& 8 are the same possibly n or u

    4,7 & 10 are the same possibly e

    6 & 9 are the same possibly t

this would give the odd word Ingententer or Jugententer

I may be wildly wrong but just a thought.

    Regards

    David

    It looks like I N G E N S T E N T E E but more than that I'm afraid I can't offer. I've never heard a word of that kind before or an occupation anywhere near to resembling it.

Census Enumerators were, and still are, required to be sufficiently literate to be able to write and spell words properly without making 'educated' guesses.

There's no word in the Collins Dictionary of the English Language that looks anything like it either.

Have you tried contacting Records to ask for an explanation? The Scottish Records Office usually oblige with this sort of thing!

Hi, I put the word Ingentenor into google and found a mention on the Mount Zion grave yard sales, Halifax of all places, it reads Ely Mitchell, place Thornton, occupation Ingententor, unfortunately it doesn't say what sort of occupation it was, at least you know the spelling is correct, a little more research might turn up what it means, sorry I can't be more helpful.

    Laurie
