I am trying to find the parents of Elizabeth Ellison, born about 1840. Census records for 1861 show Elizabeth in Macclesfield, Cheshire, 'Born at Sea'. I am having difficulty tracing any further back beyond this date. I would greatly appreciate any clues that I could follow up on that will enable progress. ....

    Hi,

The only thing I can think of is looking in the marine register. See:- http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/r...eaorabroad.htm

Do you know if Elizabeth married, if so can you get the marriage cert to obtian the fathers name?
'' No one knows who we are or where we are going until we have been and gone ''.

    Researching the following families;
Kitchin & Sharpe, Cumberland, Canada, USA : Dixon, Lancashire, Westmorland, USA
Fell & Hanslow, Warwickshire, Staffordshire, USA Australia.
    Guess, Buckinghamshire : Meakins, Northamptonshire

Yes I have the marriage certificate copy from 1870, which shows father as a Jonathan Ellison, with occupation of 'Engineer'. This could be marine engineer but I'm not sure - Trying to find out more details on name of ship, and reasons for journey (ie. immigration, resident crew member etc). Thanks.

    Hi there,

Thanks for response. Marriage was at Macclesfield Cheshire - however things seem rather complicated as Elizabeth had a 'bastard' child whilst living at her eventual Husbands address (proved by 1861 census residence, + birth certificate of Mary Jane Ellison). Her husband's (John Kirkland) 1st wife (Anne) died 1862.

I have no proof of where Jonathan Ellison resided as can't find him in Macclesfield census records - only Jonathan Ellison (with occupation as 'Engineer&#39 I can find is in 1841 census records living in St George, Middlesex, aged 30 (DoB 1811) and married a Susanna Johnson aged 25 (DoB 1816), with 2 daughters Sarah (6), and Elizabeth (2). Elizabeth may be the connection here, but I can't get to reason for 'born at sea" in census return for 'place of birth'. I'm trying to find anything that will solve following query: name of ship; reasons why aboard (ie. passengers / crew family); and if crew, rank of Jonathan.

From 1841 census, seems he was in quite an affluent neighbourhood from occupations of his neighbours. Another positive clue is that Elizabeth was educated to some fair degree is that she signed her own signature on the marriage certificate, whilst groom and witnesses were all "mark of" with an X against names.

I don't seem to be able to find Jonathan or Susanna again after 1841, maybe he was at sea during census periods ??

Records mentioned previously in thread don't seem to go back far enough....:-(

    Hello

Prestbury Church was one of the main churches in the mid 1800's, I think you will find that the Township of Prestbury in 1871 encompassed a lot of the outlying villages.

The only Water Street I can find is in Bollington which is probably 2 miles east of Prestbury. I supect the village is today very much like it was nearly 150 years ago stone cottages....a far cry from Golden Prestbury!Silk weaving was renowned it these parts.

If you type google.co.uk search map water street bollingotn you will see!

Births at sea, I have found that the Registrar General Shipping & Seamen 'recorded' these events and eventually got to this link,

I presume Elizabeth Ellison's marriage cert states the father as JONATHON ELLISON
