Thread: Joseph Modlin

Any reference to Joseph Modlin or his father Robert, both stonemasons.Joseph marr Mary Ann Dobby in Bradford YKs in jun 1840, she and the children are on every census except 1861,(that section is missing) but Joseph is never at home, there is no death for him or his father 1837 -1900, age on marr cert gives full so do not know when he was born, but estimate it to be around 1815 -1820 do not think he was born in Bradford, if you find him smack his bum and send him home.

The trouble with submitted entries on the IGI is that they are often complete guesswork. There is no death for Joseph Mod* in the death indexes in Ancestry that could be Joseph and none for 1908.

Can't see any deaths in Yorkshire for Joseph anything like Modlin/g or for any Mod* in the 4th q of 1908. Perhaps he emigrated? The death date is very exact, shame we don't know its source!

Thanks, this info was put in by a cousin Utah, the marriage is correct as I have the cert but the birth is pure speculation, he was not born in Bradford and the year is calculated from his wife's age, she was born 1821

His wife Ann Modling died in 1908 I have her cert my grandfather registered it, he was the only surving child, out of six, Thomas died in 1866 age 26(bn James) Margaret died in 1848 age 2, Hannah in 1859 age 1 Isabella in 1917 age 69, w/o Geo Bentley, the only one I haven't found is MaryAnna bn 1844 and marr Ambrose Long, have her on 1871 census but that is the last definate information.

Many thanks, yes this Joseph's wife, I have found her and the relevant children on every census except the 1861, that section didn't survive they were at 16 East st Bdf, but it is missing.

Still no sign of Joseph's death 1871-81 in the GRO indexes. So I suppose next step is to contact the relevant local register office to see if they can find it; check burial registers; or face the possibility that he deserted his wife and she pretended she was widowed for respectability.
