Thread: Looing for William and Selina Shardlow before 1871

Ahhhhh!!

These 2 are driving me to distraction!! William was born 1827 in Manchester and his wife Selina was born in 1832 in Bulwell.



They are very easy to pick up in the 1871 census:



Shardlow William 44 Head Framesmith Manchester, Cambridge Street, Radford

Shardlow Selina 39 Wife Upholstress Bulwell, Nottinghamshire

Shardlow Henry 19 Son Plumber Bulwell, Nottinghamshire

Shardlow William C 11 Son Radford, Nottinghamshire

Shardlow Frank 7 Son Radford, Nottinghamshire

Shardlow Horace 3 Son Radford, Nottinghamshire

Shardlow Annie 1 Daughter Radford, Nottinghamshire



I can't find them anywhere in the earlier census records though. They have probably been mis-spelt but I can't seem to pick them up, although I am using a new subscription service which I am only just working out!



Could anyone out there help me move my afternoon along and find these 2 in any of the earlier records. I think that they got married in 1850 - it would be great to find William with his family in 1841. I think that Selina was Selina Stevenson and her parents were John and Sarah.

I'll try looking for the son William C Shardlow, see if it helps...



The date of birth you have is a few years earlier than I thought which means that in 1841 he may well have been rounded up to the age 20, in which case his parents are Joseph and Hannah.

BMD says that Shoreditch and St Leonard are basically names for the same place so I guess it is fine to go with the Selina and William match. But why would they get married there?! And I have never seen another reference to him being William "Enoch" Shardlow. Having said that, the dates would be perfect for a a 1850 marriage and as you say there are no other possible Selinas on BDM. What are the chances of there being two William Shardlows and them both marrying Selinas at about the same time?!



The evidence must be out there...!!

I found Edward 1820, Sarah 1822, Goerge 1825 and William 1831 all children of John and Sarah Stevenson, but of course, NO SELINA!! The closest Selina to an 1830 baptism was illegitmate. There are a few others around this year though. Frustratingly, there don't seem to be records of marriages past 1838 either!
