    Default William Hood police records

    HI there;

    I am interested in finding out more about my gggrandfather, William HOOD. He is mentioned in the 1861 census, married to Caroline Hood (nee WARD-born in Kislingbury) they are living in Kislingbury, and he is listed as a police constable. Is there any way to find out more about his police career?

    Also, a few interesting tid bits from the family.

    Why would they marry in Manchester in 1856 and not in Kislingbury?

    Why do they not have their first child until 1873 in Canada?

    How can I find out when they came to Canada? The Canadian 1901 census mentions the mother (Caroline) living with her daughter (Katey) and that she immigrated in 1863, but because her husband died in 1896, there is no record of him coming over with her. Suggestions?

    Thank you soo much, whoever it is that takes their time to answer me.

    Katy Lewis

    His police record may still be with the relevant local police archives - or with the relevant county records office/archives.

    As to why they married in Manchester - maybe one or other of them was living there at the time, or they may have fancied a wedding in a City rather than in the local village.

    And for the child - they may have had miscarried or stillborn children earlier who wouldn't be recorded anywhere. Or perhaps they weren't very fertile.

    Thanks so much! Yes, you have found the right William. We have no idea if he was ex military. Katey (his daughter) has her obit mentioning that he was a soldier in England, but I am wondering if someone saw him in police uniform and mis guessed?

    I found him on the 1861 census in Kislingbury with Caroline and that is where it tells me he is a police constable.

    I have not found him in the 1871 census-either in Canada or in England

    I found them in the 1881 census in Nova Scotia with their eight yo daughter Katey.

    Lots of frustration with this family, although I finally did figure out what/where Cley Bouis is, and it was a mining village in Scotland.

    Thanks so much for the help!

    Most men who became Poice officers at that time would have been Ex-military. I have recently discovered this through gaining my gt gt grandfathers Police Service record from Chesire. Apparently the police records tend to be held in the local records office or library, you'd have to ask around but it should tell you whether he served in the army beforehand, mine even told me what regiment he served in and his occupation before that even. It also gives where he was stationed and what his pay was. It will also give full marriage details.
