Thread: Trying to find school records

Hi, was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction.



I have a 3 x ggrandfather who was a school master - in 1841 he was in Surrey, 1851 in Jersey, Channel Islands, 1861 in Mansfield, Nottingham, 1871 in Islington and then in 1881 in Wilden, Bedford - all this from the census records. I dont have the names of the schools he taught at though.



Do I have any chance of finding which schools he taught at based on only the census information I have?

I suppose you could look at the census pages to see any likely schools or try googling. Schools at that date would be private or possibly national schools, set up by charities, not state schools.



Archives might still be with the schools if they are still in existence, or perhaps with the relevant county archives.

Somewhere on Ancestry, there is a database of licensed school teachers in England. I found it several years ago and now cannot remember what it was called. The people I was looking for were born in the 1860s, so it certainly covered the 1880-1900 period, but I don't know how far back it goes. The entries that I found were very detailed; they gave the person's whole history from training through all positions held, which school, where,etc.

Sorry I can't find it for you as I no longer subscribe to Ancestry. Perhaps someone else can help.
