    Default Anyone like puzzles?

I recently acquired the birth certificate of my 2xgreat grandmother Mary Riley. it says her mothers maiden name is Mcguinn. However on the igi i found her christening and it says her mothers name is Davy. fathers name the same on both. Any ideas ? The only thing i can think of is that maybe her mother was married twice and put her maiden name on one and her former married name on the other . or maybe a mistake by IG . Sadies.

Hi Bandit, Mary was born knutsford cheshire August in 1850. Her father was Hugh Riley born Ireland abt 1816 the dates fluctuate, her mother Elizabeth born abt the same time , Born Ireland. On some censuses it says Mary (Riley) was born Ireland but on most Born Knutsford. They lived in Knutsford Cheshire 1871 1881 . after Hugh died they all seem to have stayed in Knutsford. 1861 census they lived in Macclesfield cheshire. Thanks Sadies.

I assume this is the Mary REILLY you refer to. You say that on the birth cert she is born in Knutsford so is this another Mary ?

    Hi Sadies

There is only 5.6 miles between Altrincham and Knutsford. Knutsford was a Registration Subdistrict, so she could have been born in Knutsford or just used it to describe the area.

    On Cheshire BMD found.

Surname: RILEY; Forename(s): Mary; Sub-District: Knutsford; Registers At: Cheshire East; Reference: KNU/6/85 Year 1850

Thanks everyone for replying. She was born Knutsford Cheshire, Knutsford does come under Altrincham. But still dont understand why her mums name on the birth certificate is different from the name on igi (christening) Regards Sadies.

    hello

I did have a look on the census records and like you I found a Hugh with a Mary on most of them around the time you want. I could sort these out for you if you think they are relevant. They were for the counties you wanted and will give you the addresses but Elizabeth was very elusive. I also found Hugh on his own I think it might have been 1851 - so I guess he would have been. I have been looking for Reily - it is possible it has been transcribed differently or wrongly - so another spelling might be more formcoming.

Hi again Bandit, the name Riley may well have been spelt in many different ways , Riley the english version or reilly irish version . Thanks very much for your efforts. Regards Sadies.
