Thread: Seeking information James West b. 1826

Hello there my name is Graeme Gibson, I'm a citizen of Vancouver, Canada and I'm new to this forum. I'm compiling information for a personal genealogical project to tracing back my own lineage for pure curiosity sake. Much of my maternal side of the family comes back from Gloucestershire England about a century ago at least according to family records. I would like to know more information in which I'm having troubles finding on many online genealogical databases regards to the following names and dates. This information provided below does come from the maternal side of the family tree.



The troubles I'm having are specifically many of the free databases and other web sites don't have UK census or other records dating back prior to the 1850s. I'm curious if this could be the records dating back to this time period are not yet declassified or available for such inquiries as of yet? Where would I have to go look for the census or other records dating back 1820s?



Out of curiosity I tried looking on census information in which I would assume you would have to be a citizen of the United Kingdom to look up this type of information? This is why I've came to this forum to seek any help and or assistance in tracing my material side of the family.

James West b. 1826 d. 1891? married to Eliza Fleetwood

Place of birth: Glouchestershire, England

Death 1891?

If any records are available public or otherwise, please do let me know.

If there is any genealogist or expert in this field would assist me on this forum this would be deeply appreciated.

As for the specific location of his birth according to my family records I'm not particularly certain which city or parish with in Gloucestershire. I do know he James West was born in Gloucestershire at the time. Thanks for the explanation regards the census keeping, that clarifies the main question why I could not find records online .



The other question I have is would birth certificates and cemetery records be a better source for searching? And if so were they kept prior to census records in UK before 1841?

I have had a look on the Glos. Baptism Index. There are several James Wests but only one baptised around 1826



James West

Parents: Thomas and Ann

Occupation: Shopkeeper

Abode Painswick

Bapt: 26 April 1827 St Mary Painswick



There are two other children baptised in Painswick with parents Thomas and Ann but the father's occupation is different for each entry, so I'm not sure if they are the same Thomas and Ann West.



Maryanne Clifford baptised 22/2/1818 Father's occ. Labourer



Jane Blanch baptised 2/1/1820 Father's occ. Servant



There is only one Eliza Fleetwood on the index so this one I feel sure about



Eliza Fleetwood

Parents: Charles and Mary

Occupation: Labourer

Abode: Aldsworth

Baptised:28 Aug 1831 St Bartholomew Aldsworth



The following children are her siblings, the parental details, occupation and abode being the same as for Eliza

Edwin bapt. 14 July 1833

Hannah bapt. 13 May 1837

John bapt. 17 May 1829

Richard bapt. 21 Feb 1836

Thanks you definitely this will help with the search although interesting regards the one baptism and the information provided. The information regards Eliza Fleetwood is intriguing.
