Default Help With Text From 1871 Census

I have a relative who I am unable to read the text from the 1871 Census. It looks like Pattern Maker in something Works, but I cant establish what the something is. It c ertainly looks like it has a dotted i, and starts with an e....but Im at a loss.

    Anyway, here is a photo of it;

In the next Census (1881) he was working as a Model Maker....which is obviously rather vague. If I can establish exactly what he was doing in 1871 it may be a massive help in working out his career path.

    Thank you.

You could try looking on the pages around this one to see if anyone else is doing the same thing.

There is relative doing an identical job in the same houshold. The writing for the other person looks exactly the same as this one.

The thing that confuses me is the dotted i. The dotted on both occasions is clearly ar the end of the word, but the I in "Engine" is around the middle.

That said, I have found a "policeman" on the same page, and the i is dotted right at the end of the word also, and not directly above the i. So in the word police the dot for the i appears above the letter e. Was this a convention of the day I'm not aware of?

Also, does anyone know what a Pattern Maker In An Engine Works might have actually done?

    Hello

This will be an engineering company of which according to google ther are a number still in the area

Definition of maker An artificer. one who produces a product by his own skill.

You will need to be able to understand and interpret engineering drawings and, from a drawing, visualise the finished pattern in three dimensions. ...

which fits in with model making!

Dots if you look at WILLIAM as in large, you will note there is a dot over the a, maybe the enumerator was nervous or impatient when making the entry's

    Hope this makes sens

Don't worry about the dots. It looks as if it is just the style of the enumerator's writing. Many people, especially if they are writing at speed, put the dots over the 'i' ahead of the letter itself. Look at other words on the page and most of the 'i's are not directly above the letter itself. Eg the William has the i above the a. It is what I am guilty of!

'Pattern maker in engine works' seems to be his profession, with his wife as 'weaver in cotton mill'.

Thank you for all your help guys, I think I can draw a line under this now. Abraham Large obviously worked in an engineering works, as a pattern maker and later a model maker. Sounds like an interesting career, and it sure beats the usual 'Cotton Weaver'!!!

In the 1991 census Abraham is down as a sai1maker which woud expain his wifes trade as a cotton weaver - she was originay when she married him a dressmaker - it cou1d fo11ow that she sewed the sai1s that he designed and made for the o1d sai1ing ships.
