    Default Bishop's Transcript's v Parish Records

Help- I am having a bit of a problem and wonder if anyone can help. I check the Parish Records for a death and it reads wife of - but I have also checked the Bishops Transcripts and that clearly reads Widow of I am now struggling to find a date of death, which is likely to be the right one

The Bishop's transcripts are just that, a transcript of the original in the parish register. My money's on the original.

Bishops Transcripts ( BT's) were an annual list from the parish that were required to send to the Bishop recording the BMD etc that had occurred in a particular church in the preceding year, therefore the Parish registers are the original........and presumably correct!

    Hi Pejay,

The more often things get transcribed, the more mistakes can be found. If possible always go back to the original source.

It's a bit like that game of whispers. The first word that is said can be completely different after going through several different people.

Thanks for all replies I will go on the parish register, how it could have been mistranscribed is beyond me though as that clearly reads Wife and not Widow, sometimes genealogy throws up more questions than we can answer, and it shows how easily mistakes can be made

    Hi Pejay,

If you have access to the parish records, check that an ammendment hasn't been made. This may be at the end of the parish and may not even have been changed the same year.

Thanks for reply, it may well have to wait until I go back to Woodhorn records office unless I can get something from an LDS centre. It certainly throws up some anomalies [ I think it must be my week for finding them unfortunately] talk about one step forward and two backward ... well make that three. would it be right at the end of the parish records that I would find an amendment?
