Only suggestion is that you invest £7 and get his marriage cert. This will give his age so you will know roughly when he was born. It will give his father's name as well which should enable you to locate him in 1901 census.

Don't know if this is your man especially comparing birth year to marriage year. But just because he was christened in 1897 doesnt necessarily mean he was born that year.

I think the above is correct. If you look at births for 1915 there is an Alfred Henry Mayne born with a mothers maiden name of Taylor in Northwich, Cheshire. Others too.

He must be a very low level aristocrat. I can't find him in Burkes Peerage or Who's Who.
