Thread: 1901 census question

Is it possible to find out who was living at

166 Eastfield Street, Stepney in 1901.



I have searched on Ancestry but the numbers don't seem to go up that far. I am intrigued as I have a baptism registered at 166 Eastfield St. on 1st April 1901.

There is a 165 and a 167. The numbers go up to 185.

The baptism is for a Lily Blackledge dated 1st April 1901, birth date 11th March 1901, parent's Henry and Sarah.



I am intrigued as I cannot find Sarah the mother on any census after 1891. Her husband (no marriage found) Henry is with a woman named Mary in 1901 with all of his children except Lily. In 1901 his address is 132 Eastfield Street, Stepney, and on the baptism Lily's address is clearly 166 Eastfield Street.



I have found another baptism for a William Blackledge born 4th September 1902 to same parents. So Sarah is still around, although in 1911 Henry the father is with yet another woman, with not only his own children but also some of the new woman's, all with his surname!



You can see what a problem I am having, I thought at last I had found Sarah, but now I can't find the address.

Would you mind having another look to see if there is a Sarah Blackledge or McPherson living in Eastfield St. with a baby Lily. I would be really grateful.

Only odd numbers are shown for that street on findmypast. With the houses numbered that way, I would have thought that the even numbered houses would be on the other side of the road. I can think of 3 possible reasons for this. One, there were no houses opposite but as you have a number it seems unlikely. Secondly, the houses got missed by the ennumorator. Thirdly, they got missed when being transcribed but I don't think this is the case either as two big sites have them missing. If no one picks this up, I will look for the names later.

Thanks for your help. Mary's age is wrong for it to have been mistranscribed. Lily was baptised the day after the 1901 census was taken, I was hoping to find her with her mother Sarah at 166 Eastfield Street. I just can't work out why this address was given on the baptism.



Two more children are born to Sarah and Henry in 1902 and 1905, I have the baptisms.



On the 1911 census Henry is with an Ellen plus two of his children and others that seem to be Ellen's. I sent for the birth certificate of the youngest child and it turns out to be the son of Edward (Henry's brother) and Ellen his wife.



This is why I asked for the look up on the 1911 census to find out if the above Ellen was his sister-in-law or a new Ellen.



I'm confused, I won't be surprised if you find this difficult to follow.
