Default Desperate to work out descendents of Mabel Olive Phillips b 1893.

    Dear Ancestry Aid helpers,

I wonder if you could help me try to pin down some descendents of a Mabel Olive Phillips, who was born in Reading in 1893. She is a first cousin of my granddad and her brother Percy Owen was killed in the First World War, leaving her as the only child of my grandfather's brother, Owen Stephen Phillips born 1857 Nettlebed.

    In 1901 she is:

    Name: Mabel O Phillips

    Mother: Annie

    Father: Owen S

Birth: abt 1894 - Reading, Berkshire, England

Residence: 1901 - St Giles, Berkshire, England

The Free BDM site has one Mabel Olive Phillips marrying in Wokingham I thought would be her but the year is 1903 so that can't be right!!

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Marriages Sep 1903 (>99%)

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Crisp Martha Wokingham 2c 883

    Gardner David Wokingham 2c 883

PHILLIPS Mabel Olive Wokingham 2c 883

SOBEY Edgar Percy Wokingham 2c 883

Tobey Edgar Percy Wokingham 2c 883

Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm so useless I can't even work out the parents of Mabel's mother Annie. She is an Annie Curtis - she married Owen Phillips in 1892 in Reading, but I can't find her in earlier census documents! She says she is born in Reading in the 1901 census.

    Hi,

Do you have the wedding certificate of Annie Curtis and Owen Phillips?

If not, I would suggest applying for it because it will give Annie's father's name which may help to locate her on the census.

I have had a look and cannot find her on the census either. It might even be that this was perhaps a second marriage and Curtis wasn't her maiden name. Again, the certificate should tell you this.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Someone else may be able to find her though!

    Regards

    Mrsp

Thanks for all your advice. I will apply for the marriage certificate immediately!

I guess another census will be released in a couple of years which may also be quite revealing!

Sorry, the next census which is 1921 won't be released in "a couple of years".

The ruling by the Information Commissioner that resulted in the 1911 census being opened early does not apply to the 1921 census because, unlike the 1911 census, the 1921 census was conducted under the 1920 Census Act, which is still in force and which contains a statutory prohibition on disclosure.

The stated government position from the ONS is "its intention to release the entirety of the 1921 census returns in 2022, in accordance with the non-statutory '100 year rule' which was adopted to reflechttp://www.1911census.org.uk/1921.htmt this undertaking of confidentiality".

Have got the certificate back. Very interesting as it shows that my relatives were "Primitive Methodists" .

The father is a Henry Curtis and she was living at what looks like 46 Soho Street Reading in 1892 when they were married.

Now I need to find Henry (who was a general labourer)...

Think I have found them in 1861, 71 and 81. My guess is that Annie was a bit liberal with the truth about he age in the 1901 census when she is married. I think that her date of birth is closer 50 1858. The records have a Henry general labourer in 1881. Annie is Ann in the first 2 records and then Annie in the later one.

I frustratingly can't pin any of the family down in 1891, just before she got married. I'm guessing that the surname has been mis-transcribed but I cannot find the family anywhere!

That's fantastic Elsabels! I have no idea what filtering is or indeed how you have managed to pin down the 1891 census!! Brilliant!

Soho Street was knocked down to build the civic centre in Reading I belive. Great to have the confirmation that we have the correct family though. Can't believe how many years Annie knocked off on her marriage certificate!
