Default John Constable and Iris Davison

I am doing a search for a friend and she would like some help. John and Iris are her parents and as her father was adopted she has no connections. John lived from 1823 - 1976 and was from Yorkshire. I have no details of her mother but my friend was born in Stoke Newington in aprox 1960,s Any progress woud be gratefully received.

Question 1. Does your friend have any Birth, Marriage, Death Certificates (BMD) for either of her parents?

Question 2. Was John Constable his birth name or his adopted name?

A birth certificate for John will give the names of both parents. If he was ilegitimate it will give the mother's name only. Adoption at that time was done on an informal basis and there will be no official records in existence. Sometimes the child was adopted by another member of the family.

People are always willing to help but you must give as much detail as you possibly can. Always difficult when you're doing it on behalf of someone else!

Always work from what you know to what you don't know.

I can't actually find a marriage on freebmd for Iris Davi* to John Constable, so that's a problem straightaway.

Does your friend have her parents' marriage certificate? Even if there are no clues for John (are you sure about his dates? He would have been over 100 when your friend was born), it will give Iris's father's name. The witnesses might also be relatives too.

There are also no births 1959-1971 in Stoke Newington registration district with mother's maiden name as Davison.

This is the only birth in Yorkshire in 1922-24 for a John Constable (assuming he kept his birth name)

    Births Sep 1924 Constable John W West Sheffield 9c p. 1061

Of course if your friend has her father's death cert that should give his birthdate and birthplace.

    Hi everyone

I just realised I put 1823 - off course it should have been 1923 for the dob of John Constable. Sorry about that . I am awaiting a call back from my friend re the other queries and will post them asap. These people are definately her parents and somewhere along the line there must be a dark look - ie spanish or something along those lines . this is her hope she has told me .This is from her dads side.

    regards

Well as I said if she gets her parents marriage cert that will give her father's year of birth within a year. His birthdate and place will be on his death certificate. If he was born John Constable I've already posted the likely birth for him. If he was registered with a different name that's impossible without his adoption records.

Be careful with death certificates. They do not give place of birth and the date of birth is only good if the informant actually knows it.

Your time will be best spent looking for the marriage certificate.

Are there any other children? It's always worth getting the birth certificates and looking for clues such as name and address of informant - sometimes a relative.

The marriage cert will be the best though. With the grandfathers name and occupation you may just find the family on the 1911 or 1901 census.
