Default How to find if a marriage was in England,

Hi there, I wonder if someone could help with this query,

Our Gt/grandmother Eleanor Hillier born 1875/6, had a son(our grandad) Herbert Hillier in 1897, and then disappeared, and he was raised by the Boardman family.it took us quite a while to find her again, but then on the 1911 census we found that she was living back with just her mother and sister Harriet Forsyth and Harriets children, now Eleanor also had another daughter by the name of Alice Hoffman, age 5yrs we later found out that she is Elizabeth Alice hoffman,, and it says Eleanor was married for 10yrs,we have since found out that the man was called Albert George Hoffman, but cannot find any information about the marriage, which makes us think it may not have been in England, Then in 1916 she married again to a Herbert Vincent Sowerby had two more children and died in 1921, We found this info,,on a Sowerby fam, tree of Greg Bellairs, by the way this other family did not know about our Grandad,to Eleanor, because obviously he was illegitimate, we have been led to believe that we have a German connection in some way and we thought that it may be possible that he had something to do with our Gr.dad too, would there be any kind of maintenance payment or records or someway of finding out about when she had our gr/dad, we don't think Albert was from this country, any help at all would be gratefully recieved,

    Cheers,

Default Re: How to find if a marriage was in England,

Hi Noggin28, thankyou for your interest, you have the right Boardman family and that is our Grandad Herbert, on the 1901 census he was 3yrs,but my sister Wendy( on here as wendymac) and I seem to think that they could have had him since before that, the hillier family lived in 10 Franklin St,M/c in the 1891 census and brfore that they lived in 14, Daisy St, Hulme on the 1881c/s,we have the birth cert, but there is a line through the fathers place, we had quite a time trying to find her after the 1901 c/s info, and i did see a passenger incoming in 1901 a Miss E, Hillier 1875/6 docking at liverpool and i said I'll swear thats her, but I would like to find the boarding of that to see, she might have been sent away after Herbert was born in 1897,I had the idea that the father of the Boardman fam, was in someway involved at first, because the two streets Franklin and Osborne were near and with all those Aunts /uncles and two Grandparents in the Hillier fam/there must have been something, and even though the Boardmans raised him as their own and he is buried with William and Sarah in Philips Park, they never gave him their name, and i said it could be that if he was Williams that could have been why Sarah did'nt want to do that because she did'nt bear him herself but was willing to raise him, after saying that they were quite a well off family and he seemed to have done ok, albeit he died age 24 of a tragic accident poisoning, and the only picture we have of him is in a huge Rolls Royce,he was a chauffer apparently, but the Boardmans seem to have a few properties.

In the 1911 c/s we found Eleanor by accident again looking for Harriet her sister, and they were in 17 Ryder St, Collyhurst M/c,and thats the last until we started to look for Alice Hoffman, which we found was Elizabeth A, hoffman, and then we saw the tree and that she had had two more children and alice, still with her, now eleanor died in 1921,and the youngest Doris would have been only 2yrs and John i think 4/5 alice would have been about 10/11,we don't know if the father raised them all or not but we did find a ELizabeth A Boardman, no fam died in I think 1995,so our Grandad had two more sisters and a brother he did'nt know about, and our dad Herbert had two aunts and an uncle who lived longer than him and did'nt know , sorry to give you wae and peace but the story just unfolds. Cheers Vajay
