    Default William Gray Marriage

    Hi

Could anybody help with the following lookup please.

    Info I have is:-

William Gray c1861 Born Scotland 1901 London Census aged 40

Elizabeth Gray c1862 Born Scotland 1901 London Census aged 39

I have a funeral Card stating he was 78 when he passed in 1932, c1854.

But I have just received their first sons Birth Cert Born in London 1893 and Mother is on as "Betsy McLinnen". I know Betsy is short for Elizabeth, but have been unable to find a marriage anywhere, have checked Scottish Records and also UK marriages, but nothing as yet, does anybody have any ideas to find their marriage and births?? Scottish Research is new to me so poss I might have missed something.

    Thanks

    Hi Reikiangel,

As Elizabeth is aged 30 at the birth of her son it is possible that this is her second marriage and that she married in the surname of her previous husband. Does it say Elizabeth or Betsy on the censuses ?

    Hi Starlight

Sorry for the delay in replying, researching this again.....

On the 1901 Census she is Elizabeth, I went for the first childs birth cert to check his mothers maiden name, "Betsy McLinnen" She's definately ours, just can,t find the marriage yet.

    Hi Reikiangel,

Does it definately say McLinnen on the birth certificate? I've searched Scottish censuses and cannot find any trace of her.

    Hi Mrsp2008

Definately "Betsy Gray formerly McLinnen". They were living at Bramber Rd, Fulham at time of Birth in 1893, havn't been able to locate them on the 1891 in London yet.

I have noticed that the McLinnen seems to be spelt various ways tho.

    Hi Reikiangel,

I don't know why I thought that question would help . Believe it or not it is a lot easier doing Scottish research, that is until they decide to move to England. If at least one child had been born in Scotland, their birth certificate would have also given the date and place of it's parents marriage. If the mother had been previously married it would have listed her surnames.

I am wondering if the registrar had difficulty in understanding the accent. There are so many William Gray's marrying Elizabeths around that time in Scotland that it would cost a fortune to look at everyone. The only thing I can suggest if no-one has a better idea is to get the birth certificate of one of the other children and see if the surname is the same.

Thats exactly what iv'e been thinking about ordering one of the other certs, I went for this one first thinking as her name was Elizabeth, she probably would have used the official version for the first child... silly me. More important tho is the maiden name, definatley too many Williams and Elizabeths around and the spelling variations dont help..

A big Thankyou for trying, will let you know what the outcome is.
