Have you got his death cert? If he committed suicide there would have been an inquest and both the suicide and the inquest are likely to have been reported in the local papers. They usually said if the dead person was married or had children.

Ok 1871 census, year before he died:

    1 Carlton Place, Bristol

John Coombs head married 62 manager of the umbrella [a small word I can't read looks like minners] born Bristol

Sarah Coombs wife 53 born [looks like] Lilabury, Wiltshire

Eliza Gardner niece 12 St George Gloucestershire

    1861

    17 Broad View, Bristol

    John Coombs 53 umbrella maker

Sarah Coombs 44 [birthplace looks like Littlebury] Dorset

Louisa Coombs 23 daughter umbrella maker

Martha Coombs 21 daughter umbrella maker

Jane Coombs 19 daughter umbrella maker

    so John had family.

    Hi bandit

Just searched the "Bristol Mercury" for that time frame and only found these 2 references to Coomb.

    Death notice on the 26th

Coombs - October 23 at the Infirmary, Cardiff, Mr. John Coombs, late of Pennywell Road, Bristol, aged 67

And a letter on the 19th from St John's Vicarage Cardiff, regarding the attempted suicide of Mr Coombs "of this parish" who was suffering from severe paralytic seizure partly affecting his brain.

Are there 3 different Gentlemen here or 2 or all 1?

    Regards

    David

    Hi

john ( from BristoI St John 0was the manger of the shop with my 2x great gran - umbreIIa maker.he was in the shop1871. in 1872 he committed suicide whist he baIIance of his mind was disturbed. He is buried in the grave in Cardiff, she is on top and her daughter is on top. He bought the pIot and I have the recipts from CardiffCC . The western maii was the paper of the time and I am going to check in the Iibrary. he was born 1808 and she was 1836 but I dont know the reationship between them .No one know anything of him in the famiIy. The death certificate states 15 as day of death and the inquest was 23rd October 1872 in Cardiff RoyaI Infirmary. So his name and hers ties up with the records in the Cardiff trade directories of the time. The business went to her daughter after untiI she died and was put in the pIot.Is there any chance of me having copies of the doc you have ? it woud be a coincidence if there was more than one at the same time period. And why shoud it be reported in BristoI unIess He was something big in BristoI or had connections there.

thats aII I know - any heIp i am gratefuI for

If you have the exact date of the inquest you can probably email Cardiff Library and ask them to send a photocopy of the report in the Western Mail for a small sum.

    Hi bandit

I was searching on the British Library 19th Century newspaper collections which I can access through my local (Buckinghamshire) Library card. Other libraries have access as well.
