Default Jacob Keeling of Chilcomb, Hampshire, born c1818

    Hello,

I am a bit stuck with this part of my family tree.

Jacob Keeling was born c1818 in Chilcomb, Winchester, Hampshire.

He married Elizabeth Phillips in 1846 in Winchester.

He was the inkeeper at Winchester's Jolly Farmer pub in the 1840s/50s/60s.

They both lived there and had several children.

Interestingly, the pub still exists today, as I visited a couple of months ago.

I suspect that his father was another Jacob Keeling, who married somebody called Emmy, or Emma, and that they were both born in about 1796.

Is it possible for anybody to confirm that for me?

It would be magnificent if somebody could come up with Jacob senior's parents too.

I know of a couple of Keeling families from the Hampshire area around the time, and I would love to be able to connect them up.

    Thanks for any clues!

these would appear to be the christenings of children of jacob keeling and elizabeth

    Hello!

Well, thank you ever so much for the massive effort that you put in here.

Unfortunately, as you say, none of this musing helps go back from Jacob - I've already got most of what you've mentioned.

But I didn't spot that poor Albert died so tiny.

And I had the census with Jacob in Winchester College in 1841, but is that the same source as you mentioned in your first post?

The death reference for Jacob the Elder that you found seems to be 10 years out from his birth date - 1786, instead of 1796. So, I wonder if that is the right death record? FreeBMD has another Jacob Keeling dying in Gloucestershire in 1877, aged 81, which matches the birth year 1796 perfectly.

Somebody with access to old Winchester parish records on another forum told me that the following were possibly Jacob the Elder's children:

    Ann (1813) James (1814 - 1820) Charlotte (1816) Jacob (c1818 - 1876) James (1821)

Though there seemed to be some strange typos and other errors, so I'd like to arrange a visit to Winchester to see those records for myself.

Your suggestion of getting the marriage certificate of Jacob and Elizabeth is a very good one, and that is something that I really should do. Thanks for that idea.

By the way, George John James Keeling is my great grandfather.

On the off chance that anybody reading this is descended from these Keelings, please get in contact!

i did wonder if there were two jacob and elizabeths as they have two children baptised weeke then two baptised st thomas' and then two back at weeke which seems strange. the last two at weeke never appear on any census with them. albert dies and i cant find anything about william at all.

i did note the other jacobs death but if that is the correct one who is the jacob dying in winchester. i might be tempted to get the death certificate of the winchester jacob to see who informs addresses etc . he must connect with your family i'm sure.

without the marrige certificate of jacob and elizabeth you will be guessing that jacob the elder is the father.
