Default Anyone have access to Canadian Weddings around 1913?

Summary: I need to find a wedding of an Ivor Brooker and a Lottie or Charlotte. The wedding looks like it took place between May 1913 and May 1914. We think in Toronto, Ontario.

Ivor was born Ivor Sydney Cuthbert Brooker in 1892, in Reading

Lottie or Charlotte was born in 1891 in Portsmouth (we think).

Background:Please help us piece together the family history! My great gran had a child out of wedlock. She is a Brooker and named him Ivor Sydney Cuthbert Brooker - we cannot find the father who may have been a Sydney Cuthbert! When he is only about 8 he appears to be at a boarding school in Reading under the name Ivor Kinchin. The poor lad was then sent to Canada from England when he was only 13, listed as Ivor Brooker again! Toronto is listed as the destination. We have a record of him on the ship in 1906. He then moved to Canada in 1922 with Lottie and the record entering the USA says that they have come from Toronto. In the USA we have records of him with his wife Lottie, in California. Unfortunately no one seems to know his wife's surname. We don't believe they had any children and they both died in the 1970s-80s before anyone could ask them for their history.

We would love to trace the family of Lottie and a surname is probably the only way we are going to do it. Hopefully if we had a surname we could find her on a GB census.

Thank you to anyone who can help. Neil.

    Thanks so much for looking.

I also have those records - I found them on Ancestry, I don't know if you did the same. Amazingly, Ancestry also has the record of Ivor Brooker entering Canada (listed as Ivan Brooker) and also the record of Ivor Brooker and Lottie Brooker entering the USA. It even lists their height, complexion and hair colour. The one thing it doesn't have is Lottie's maiden name though and that is what we a so keen to find!

    Thanks again for your help.

    Hi,

I will carry on looking to see what else I can find. I thought I'd found some more info, but looking into it, I don't think it's your man!

Thanks again. I have been trying every version of his name and cannot find a marriage anywhere.

My great gran obviously went to great lengths to hide poor Ivor. To be sent away from your mother to another country at 13 seems pretty mean doesn't it. I didn't even know that he existed at all until a distant relation told me a year or two ago!

    Hi,

What info have you got that makes you think the wedding took place in Canada and between the dates you have given?

    Hi Neil

So couldn’t find the marriage but noted on the 1922 border crossing between Canada and US Lottie states that she was born in Portsmouth and that they are going to stay with her sister Mrs. A Green in California.

There is a 1921 border crossing for an Annie Green, B: 1888 Portsmouth, England and son Vernon A. Green B: 1919 Canada where annie gives Lottie Brooker as her contact.

On the 1930 US Census for Annie she is living in Hesperia, San Bernardino, California with her son and husband Alfred B: 1890 England.

So I guess we are looking for an Annie and Lottie in Portsmouth or a marriage for an Alfred Green and Annie ? which may give another avenue of research to finding Lottie’s Maiden Name.

In the 1930 census in America, where Ivor has been transcribed as Tor Brooker and Charlotte is Lottie, one of the questions is age at first marriage. Ivor appears to have said that he was 21 which would give 1914/15 as an marriage year. Lottie appears to have said 27 although it is unclear. She is definitely older than Ivor, but there is some confusion in the records.

They definitely entered the USA from Canada together in 1922 as man and wife. They were previously living in Toronto.

A relation of mine who has done more research came up with the dates I quoted above. I think that sometime between 1912 and 1916 would be fairer looking at the records.

To confuse the issue slightly, Ivor was sent to Canada aged 13, but he seems to have some memories in letters that he wrote of a shop owned by an uncle in England, suggesting that he may well have visited England from Canada. It is possible that he married Lottie in England I suppose.

    Neil.

    You are an absolute genius!!

Annie and Alfred are mentioned in Ivor's photos!

The name "Green" had been mis transcribed as "Garon" by Ancestry and I've been looking for an A Garon and a Mrs A Garon everywhere! We even found an Alfred Garon living nearby in California!

I had the Portsmouth birth, so Annie is Lottie's sister. How fantastic. Lottie Green and Annie Green, they must be on the census somewhere...

Can't wait to email my relative....

    Thank you SOOO much!

Sorry, I forgot to mention that Mrs A Garon is listed as "sister" when she is a contact when Lottie and Ivor go to the USA. Presumably Annie came to Canada after Lottie but moved to the States before her.
