    Default Census Lookup 1851

I have hit a brick wall. I am researching Charles March Wibrow b.1826 in Finchley, Middlesex. He was a soldier in the 10th hussars in the 1861 census at the Cavalry Barracks, Ipswich, Suffolk. His wife is given as Emma , however, I have his wife as being Susannah b.1837 born Spetisbury, Dorset. I have him as a servant in 1871, but can find nothing of him or his wife in the 1851 census. He had two children born prior to 1861, they were Charles b.1857 at Birmingham, Warwickshire and Emma b. 1860 at Aldershot in Hampshire.

I do not know when he joined the 10th hussars. I have Charles and his family as living at Tower Hamlets in 1841. It is just that 1851 census that eludes me.

Thank you for any help you can give.

Colin could this be a second marriage, given the age of Emma as 23 and Charles at 35 with children of only 1 and 3 its a possibility.

On the 1861 census is the following which I think is what you refer to in your post

    Reference: Class: RG9; Piece: 1161; Folio: 74; Page: 28; GSU roll: 542765.Class: RG9;

Norwich, Ipswich, Parish of St Matthew

    Cavalry Barracks

Charles aged 35 Married born Finchley

Emma aged 23 Married born West Bromwich

Emma aged 1 born Hants, Aldershot

Charles aged 3 born Warwick, Birmingham

Colin, this looks a bit of a connundrum. Does the marriage record for Charles and Susannah (which I presume is the one on Freebmd as June 1857 6d 153) show if Susannah has the second name Emma?

It does however look that he married again as recorded as Charles M Wibrowto Annie Cherrett Blandford Dorset in Dec. 1866.

By the 1871 census he is shown with Annie in Folkestone (this looks by the age of the younger children to be a second marriage)

Emma Junior is on this list and this fits with the 1861 census details

    Ref: Class: RG10; Piece: 1014; Folio: 8; Page: 9; GSU roll: 827263.

I presume you have this record?

By the birthplaces of the children in order

    Alfred, York

    Arthur Dublin

Elizabeth Kent he was still in the army and travelling around.

Have you tried the National Archives for his service record? These give a great deal of information including Next of Kin, when he joined up and were etc which would help sort this connundrum of wives names and how many?

Colin, do you know were the 10th Hussars were in 1851? This might indicate why the Wibrow family can't be located on the 1851.

You could post on this site in the military section or try this one and post a query
