Thread: Miss Jane Godding

Need help with relationship of Miss Jane GODDING. I believe she looked after raising my maternal grandfather and siblings after their mothers death in 1893. All the information I have is an address of 62 Coombes Lane, Northfield, Birmingham, England. I believe this address was from the 1950's. I also have previous addresses of No. ? Council Houses, Stallpit Rd, Shrivenham, Swindon, Wiltshire and 223 Weoby Castle Rd, Sellyoak, Birmingham, England. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Addresses deciphered from an old address book.



The children she may have taken in, were Harry, Thomas, Elizabeth, William, Albert, Edward, Edith and Walter GODDING. Their mother was Elizabeth Ann Godding(nee Gardner) (b abt. 1856) (d abt 1893) married to Thomas Godding (b 18 Mar 1859).

In 1901 Thomas, John, Edward, Edith and Walter were living in Guildford, also in the house was Mary J Godding who was Thomas' sister, could she be Miss Jane Godding?

Thank you all for your help and information. I believe Jane Godding is probably Mary Jane Godding (b Sep Q 1867 Faringdon 2c 261) sister to Thomas. I'll have to order the birth cert to make sure. I had originally thought Thomas had remarried to a Mary after the death of Eliza. The original addresses came from my mothers old address book which she used up till about the fifties. The last address listed for Miss Jane GODDING was 140 Wellington Rd., Handsworth, Birmingham.

A bit of further info, in the 1911 census Thomas Godding and Miss Mary Jane Godding were living in the same house in Bromyard, Herefordshire.

I think there's a strong chance this is Thomas, and his sister with their family in 1871. If them, they've been enumerated as Godwin (probably how the enumerator heard the name). They were all born and living in Kingston Lisle

Thank you Slizzy for the further info. The John Godwin family is the right one. His parents were James Godwinn(b 1790) and Ann Page(b 1791). James parents were, I believe, Robert Godwinn and Esther Johnson. I have only the names for Robert and Esther, no birth dates or dates of death.
