    Default birth reg'd twice - same ref - 2 surnames ??

    Hi,

I have a situation where a birth has been registered twice in 1905 - same 1/4 and year - gives name of mother same - same reference - but 2 different registrations = 2 surnames - mother given married name and maiden name on both (1 reg gives child married name) but 2nd registration completely different and gives child what is now different family name...

If someone was adopted would they have 2 listings ?? I thought this might be the answer BUT my hubby was adopted and he only has one listing under his original birth name albeit we have a certificate showing his adopted name...

I'm confused..... can you help ??

Adoptions are listed on a separate register. If both the references are identical this means that the birth was only registered once, though perhaps the name was changed on the certificate afterwards.

Is it the surname that is different? Maybe the child was born illegitimate and name was changed after the parents married?

    Hi,

Thank you so much for the responses - the references are identical - the mother was married as the certificate shows her maiden name and married name - the chilld being given her married name on one of the registrations I have also found a marriage for her confirming her married and maiden name.

The 2nd registration changes the childs surname BUT her names remain the same - indicating that the persons listed and mother and "father" were not married BUT the child took the "fathers" surname - which to this day is the family name.

I am sorry I am not being difficult or holding back info - it's just that someone has asked me to do a little research and the first thing I look at for them might be a major skeleton hence my not detailing the actual names.

As I said it isn't necessarily a 2nd registration, it could just be that the child was indexed under both parents' surnames. Of course when parents are married to eachother, there will be an index under the married name and one for the mother's maiden name. But you've found one with a surname which isn't the mother's married surname?

Legally, if a mother wishes to name a father on a birth cert and she isn't married to him, the father has to attend the register office when the child is registered.

The child's surname isn't normally listed in the name column as it is assumed it is the same surname as the father (or in the case of an illegitimate child, the surname of the mother).

I had one where the mother was unmarried so the child was registered in her name as unmarried, father unknown. Then a few months later she married and was able to reregister the birth with the fathers name on it The old listing was cancelled and the new certificate dated 6 months after the birth says registered with permission of the registrar general.
