Thread: Swansea Lookup Please

I have been trying for years to find the birth of my great grandfather named John Farley, supposed to have been born in Swansea,Glamorgan. The birth date varies on the 1891 Census he was 38 (bd 1853),1911 Census he is aged 56 (bd 1855), on his death certificate in 1912 he was 50 (bd1862).He was married to Elizabeth McConnell and they had two daughter Margaret Ann and Mary Ann(my grandmother) I know the history of the two girls but there was also a son Christopher aged 3 born Ardsley,Yorks. on 1891 Census but unable to trace him either although he did notify of his father's death on the death certificate.

Any help much appreciated.

Hi,

I have checked the GRO Birth Index for the period 1850 to 1865 and although there are many entries for the name John Farley there is none born in Swansea. A check on FreeBMD for the same time period just entering the surname comes up with no one with the name Farley being registered in Swansea. This means that either the birth wasn't registered or he wasn't registered in Swansea or he was registered but the name was spelt differently.

Thank you for looking. I have explored most of these avenues and keep coming up with a blank. The next move I think will have to be to the Swansea records office, I know they can do a search and charge an hourly rate of £25, I actually have the form printed off but thought I would try here before proceeding with that step.

Has it got place of birth on his death certificate? Also, do you have his marriage certificate? What was his father's name? Have you managed to find him on any censuses before 1891?

Thank you for your reply death certificates do not give the place of birth and no I have not managed to find his marriage date but their first child was born in 1883 I believe so it was probably around that date. No I have not found him before the 1891 census.

I think I may have found John Farley on the 1901 census! He is a widow and is boarding with his son Christopher! His occupation is railway navvy, which matches his occupation in 1891. The enumerator of the 1901 census has made some awful mistakes, but I'm pretty sure it's him! He has his place of birth as Birkenhead, Cheshire, which is the same a Elizabeth's on the 1891. If you are able to take a look on ancestry, he is transcribed as John Farileay(!!!), if not, if you send me a PM with your email address, I will try and send you a copy.



I couldn't tell from your previous posts whether you had found him on the 1901 census, so hope I've been able to help!



Also, is this Margaret and Mary on the 1901 census?
