Thread: Are maiden names recorded on a death certificate?

I'm stuck. I don't know whether my ancestor is Mally Hall or Mally Holt. I initially thought it was Holt, but on the birth certificate for her youngest child, the only one born after 1837, it looks more like Hall, but could still be Holt.



I was wondering whether a death certificate would also record her maiden name. She died about 1857 if the date matters.



Is it worth getting her death certificate?

Karin, none of the English death certificates that I have contain the maiden name of the woman.

However, if she died in Scotland then they nearly always contain the maiden name.

Perhaps you could scan the birth certificate and post it for others to give their opinion on whether Holt or Hall is the last name

Wish I'd seen this thread before I ordered two death certs to establish maiden names as unable to find marriage details. They arrived today, neither show maiden name or place of birth as I was expecting.

Maiden names are only included on death certs after 1969 so not much use for family history.



If you give us Mally's husband's name we could look for a marriage.
