Thread: Smiths in Scotland - newbie panic

Hi All



I have been researching genealogy on and off for about 7 years, but am totally lost on this line, due to the Surname and Place....



But here goes:-



Nicol Smith 03.01.1902 - 14.02.1940



Following info from Copies of Homes Application Forms, completed by Mother:-





Samuel Smith aged 64

Agnes Smith aged 40, maiden name DRENNAN

1 other son, William Drennan Smith,aged 11



William Drennan, Cowlains Rd

Aunt Mrs McGreggor same address

Mrs Thomson, Springburn

Mrs James Moore, Canada.



Nicol was my grandfather, but died when Mum was about 3, so nothing is really known about him. Sadly mum died before I found this info.



I would be really grateful if anybody can help, or point me in the right direction, as I know nothing about the areas/places in Scotland, and the surname does'nt help.

Who are Samuel and Agnes Smith parents of. Are they your parents . Also, when were these people aged 64 and 40 ?

Samuel and Agnes are parents of Nicol (my Gandfather).



Samuel aged 64

Agnes aged 40



Ages as quoted Agnes when filling in admittance form dated 02.12.1912.

This looks like the marriage but there is no further information as it is from the old Parish records. I will try and find them on the census after having something to eat.

Have a big hug from me, definately looks like them, Samuel was also a Blacksmith, he was in an Asylum which is why my Grandfather was separated from his brother and placed in Quarriers Home.



Could you help with the previous marriage, then I could try locating his other children myself, if thats not too cheeky.

Thank you so much for all the help you have both given me, as without it I would still be struggling/giving up on this side again. I can't believe how much info you have both found so quickly.



I have seen that some Drennens did come from Ireland in searches iv'e done over the last few years but have never been able to tie anything up at all.



I have no details on Agnes/Ireland at all, Census details would be very helpful as Iv'e heard that Ireland can be a bit tricky for research too?



Is there a map or something that would tell me the areas and how they work in Scotland that would help me in the future.



Once again Thank you both for your help, I have an uncle (Mums Bro) who will be so pleased to know that he does have a family eventually..
