Thread: Help to research Great Grandmother

I recently obtained my Grandfather's birth certificate who was born in 1919 and it gives no father's name just the mothers. How can I research her as I have no idea how old she was at the time of giving birth etc or if indeed she got married. I also obtained my Grandfather's marriage certificate and again no fathers name on it, just a line crossed through. Using the 1901 census I searched their family name and the area the mother was resident in. I found a family but don't know if it's the same as she could have been born after 1901. Where do I go from here?

try and find the local website for the local town etc, and you may be able to find her parents on that , just a thought , hazelnut

thats a difficult one particularly if she has a fairly common name.



Realistically most women gave birth between about the ages of 18-43. I suppose you could start by seeing how many candidates there were on the 1911 census.



Any clues on the address of birth?



Personally I think it unlikely that your grandmother was an only child. I suppose you can look for births with same surname (or monther's maiden name) in the same area within say 10 years of your grandmother's birth.



But I don't think this is going to be easy,you may have to go up a few blind alleys. If the birth was in a village it might be easier to trace than in a big town.

If you know the area he was born you could try searching the Parish Records for a baptism? it MAY hold a clue



It seems evident from the marriage certificate that he wasn't aware of his biological father.
