    Default Mary Kelly

    Hello

I am trying to find my great grandmother. Her name was Mary Kelly she is buried at pendleton church in salford. The story goes that she came over from Canada with her son, my grandad, who was only a toddler at the time. My grandfathers name s Arthur Kelly his dob is 7/7/1912 so he may have been about 3. From the research I have done in 1914 world war 1 started and there was a famous drought so she may have come over to escape this. We really do not know and have been wanting to know exactlywhy she came. She did not come with her husband it was just her and my grandad. She died when my grandad was around 7. I thought I would work backwards and get her death certificate so i could then get her dob and try to find her birth certificate.

Any help with this would be really amazing as we are desperate to know.

    Thanks

    Hi,

On what date was Mary Kelly buried at Pendleton Church?

I've looked on Ancestry at the incoming passenger lists but Mary and Arthur don't appear to be there.

    Hi kezzyp,

You say that she did not come with her husband. Do you know if she was married . If she was you will need to find her maiden name before being able to find her birth.

If she died after 1969 the death cert should give her maiden name (if she was married) and her birthplace and date - assuming the informant knew them.

Before 1969 it will state if she was a wife or widow, but again the information is only as good as the information given by whoever registered the death.

Have you got Arthur's birth certificate?

looking on ancestry the death of arthur gives birth date as 07 july 1913 not 1912. If it is right one (although depending on who informed)

    Name:Arthur KellyBirth Date:7 Jul 1913Death Registration Month/Year:Jan 1998Age at death (estimated):84 Registration district:Salford Inferred County:Lancashire Register number:TC54 District and Subdistrict:0111C Entry number:122

on the immigration lists there is also this:

    Name:Arthur KellyBirth Date:abt 1914Age:6/12 Port of Departure:Montră©AL, Quă©Bec, Canada Arrival Date:4 Jul 1914Port of Arrival:Liverpool, England Ship Name:Lake Manitoba .Shipping Line:Canadian Pacific Line Official Number:113497

however he is accompanied by both parents george and fanny . fanny can be a short form for mary . he is the only one i can see.

I have never heard of Fanny as a pet name for Mary. Fanny is a pet name for Frances. Mary is sometimes nicknamed as Molly.

    Hello

Thank you everyone for all your help I am really grateful.

Welshlady I cant believe what you have found out in such a short time. Yes my grandad, Arthur's dob was 7/7/1913 so yes you have the right one. Regarding the immigration records, if it is him then he would have been 1 at the time not 6 months but I am not sure how accurate they would have been. Is there anyway we can find his birth certificate, so we can find out what his mum and dad's name was. The story we have always been told was that he came over with just his mum but we have always thought why would she come over to a strange country on her own so maybe dad came too. I need to get Mary's death certificate to find out her date of birth and Arthur's to get Mary's maiden name.

    Thanks again for everyone's help

You don't say if you knew if she was married. She might not have been. She might even have been born in England, mightn't she? Perhaps she was travelling to stay with relatives or for a job, or to get away from an unplesant situation in Canada.

Yes definitely Jeuel there are numerous possibilities, there was even a thought that she may have come from Ireland with a name like that!

I really need my grandad's birth certificate which will give her maiden name if she had one.
